Pleasant surprise.....

Every now and then I see an opportunity for a quick flip on a player who's market value hasn't caught up with their current level of play. When this happens, I usually go to Beckett.com and see if anything decent is being offered. I saw such an opportunity last week with Dirk Nowitzki and his incredible playoff run capped by a 50 pt. game that put the Western Finals out of reach. I also forecasted that the Mavs will crush the Heat in the Finals as the Heat have almost no chance to win a 7 game series. Dwyane Wade is hurt and running on fumes, Shaq isn't nearly as dominating as he used to be, and Nowitzki's in an unbelievable zone. Anybody paying attention to how the playoffs have been going would clearly pick the Mavs.

On ebay, SP Dirk RC's are going for around $50 raw, but I wanted to buy at least a half dozen or so and they're not coming up nearly as often as I needed. One dealer on Beckett had 5 listed at $60 each so I jumped on them. Got them today and 4 out of the 5 are absolute blazers with a great shot at a 10 grade. I'm going to send those in using the 10 day service in the hopes that I can capitalize on the momentum of the Mavs impending championship.

After last night's game, there's no way I can see the Mavs losing. Dirk had his worst game of the playoffs (he looked nervous and awkward- should turn it around in game 2) and their other scorer Josh Howard looked equally bad, and the Mavs still won fairly convincingly. I knew it was a longshot, but maybe the 15/1 I got on a Mavs sweep might come in.

    Lee,
I had Miami +5, but that's another story! Anyway, what is considered Dirk's true RC?

His worse game was game 4 of the Western Conference Finals.
  • I agree w/ you 100% about Dirk. I also have started collecting raw and will be sublitting under the $5 registry special. Can you send in multiples of the same itm for that special? I also agree that there is no way for the Heat to win. I am a relatively pessimistic Mavs fan due to past playoff years, but the "ugly" eastern confernce style of basketball (which can't score over 80 pts) has no chance. On the Mavs worst night (which might have been last night), they are at least 90 pts +.....HACK - A -SHACK !!!!

go- not sure if there's any "true" RC as there were roughly 20 jillion products produced in 1998 and all of them had the top draft picks. I think the SP is the most sought after non-parallel RC.

I stand corrected. It was his 2nd worst game.

side note- You think the Bucks would like to do over the Nowitzki for Robert 'tractor' Traylor trade they made on draft day '98?

craig- it's good to see Shaq's been working on his freethrows. Didn't he miss his first 10 or something?

Judging from your pessimism, I guess you were a Mavs fan back in the days of Derek Harper, Roy Tarpley, Rolando Blackman and Mark Aguirre? They actually put a few good runs together with not a ton of talent.

I'm still upset the Sixers passed on Nowitzki and Paul Pierce that year to draft Larry Hughes. Hughes has been a decent player, but the Sixers got rid of him before he became pretty good...
  • Lee-

YES - SHACK finished i think 1 for 8. They were lucky though because most of the misses were SO BAD that the ygot offensive rebounds. I have liked the mavs since inception and can't get the picture out of my mind of Derek Harper dribbling out the last 11 seconds of a tie game.

I am also a fellow terp graduated in 12/1991. I missed all the good sports years...

What are you talking about? You got to see Jarod Mustaf and Tony Massenberg. Those guys are HOFers for sure.
