Thoughts on "NumisMedias Fair Market Values"

lkeneficlkenefic Posts: 8,232 ✭✭✭✭✭
How accurate is the pricing info on these pages? I've been looking at alternatives to eBay for purchasing Large Cents at decent prices but am striking out. I ran across the NumisMedia website and found what dealers should "typically" sell these items for [including a mark-up over wholesale]... Thoughts on this website and their pricing info...Thanks

Leo

I still use it for coins less than MS (they changed it a year or so ago so that you have to be a paying member to see MS values).

I have been using it as a paid subscriber for a couple years now, but I think the grey sheets are more accurate - the MS prices seem to run very similar to pcgs, with a few exceptions here & there. I think they are a bit high, judging from responses from other collectors. More than anything, I use them to judge relative prices, or to get a sense of rarity.

Actually, it's been several years now. I used to use this sight before you had to be a subscriber, but not anymore. image

One nice thing about their pricing information is that if you have consumated a deal for a coin and are willing to submit details of the transaction that they will then adjust the price on their site to reflect the transaction. Obviously, this works best for low population coins that are thinly traded, but this is exactly the area where I find The Greysheet to be most lacking.

  • I describe the Numismedia FMV listings as "medium-high retail values." They're lower than Coin World Trends, and I can't imagine paying Trends. I'd pay Numismedia FMV for certain coins (tougher dates, nice-for-the-grade).
The strangest things seem suddenly routine.

The large cent prices I am most familiar with (AU late date) seem fairly accurate. Remember, however, that eye appealing examples in any grade will fetch more....Mike

"Coins with nice eye-appeal" and "Large Cents" seem to be oxymoronic when spoken in the same sentance...at least to me lately. Mike...you're absolutely right in stating that these coins fetch a premium over the FMV that NumisMedia lists or here at the PCGS website. I had been looking on eBay and separating the volume of just utter garbage from decent coins is a daunting task. When I am fortunate enough to find one, either on someones' website or even on eBay, these coins realise somewhat more than FMV...sometimes as much as AU money for a VF coin with "no problems" or decent eye-appeal.

The search goes on I suppose...L
