Season 3 of CSI there was an episode that had a coin collection stolen

Kinda cool, they showed a 1909S lincoln (said it was a VDB - S Lincoln, but never showed the reverse).

Then they showed a St. Gaudens Proof Bullion coin and called it a 1907 Double Eagle.

Nice try, cool to see coin related TV shows, but I'd like to see more realizm.

  • That was cool. I think Greg mentioned he had a 16-D Mercury he wanted to trade for the 09-S VDB. That was one of the triggers that got me back into active collecting after being dormant for a few years.

It has been a few years since I saw that episode, but if memory serves me correctly, the interaction between the undercover CSI (Greg?) and the bad-guy coin shop owner was pretty hilarious. There was some dialogue about the VDB being in a flip and he was meaning to get it slabbed, and the dealer just happens to have the "Hot" coins hidden in the back when the trade offer comes up.

They had an episode with a metal detector that we talked about in a different MD forum, but the Garrett made noise like a Geiger counter versus a real Garrett MD. Was still neat to see one in action, even if it was "Hollywood-ized".

What show was it and on what channel?

    Sounds kind of interesting.

The episode was called "Precious Metals"

I'm not sure what channel, may daughter has them on DVD and I was watching a while ago and noticed there was something that interested me.

Yep, the 1916-D dime was discussed, as a trade for the 09-Svdb cent. The one they showed looked like a mint state RB coin (hard to tell in a second or two - I guess I don't qualify as a grader).

Still it's cool to have shows about coins.

Yes! Ok, a little bit of a tangent but here is a bonus question. Which coin did Ricky Schroeder and his friend get into trouble for selling on the show Silver Spoons?

And I liked seeing the "Bones" episode this year with the 1943 Copper cent supposedly hidden on an old coin dealer envelope of a long dead collector! Who says you can take 'em with you--LOL? Plus I guess the Smithsonian (the Jefferson Institute) presumably could tell a real off metal 1943 fron the National Collection, so it made sense.image

Speaking of TV shows with coin collections, I remember an episode of Dennis the Menace (from the early 1960's in black and white) where Mr. Wilson had a Mercry dime collection, including a 1916D dime. It was his pride and joy., Dennis of course got hold of the dime and spent it at a soda machine on a bottle of soda. Mr. Wilson found out about things and watching him try to recover his dime from the soda machine was funny.

  • I just completed testimony as an expert witness in a "stolen coin collection" civil suit. Neat stuff.

JadeRearCoin, very interesting, you testifying as an expert in a civil case over stolen coins.

If you are able to disclose same, what state is the lawsuit located in? If California, I would be interested in obtaining the name of the county in which the suit was filed and the case number. I am a lawyer praticing civil law in California and am interested in these types of cases.

What area did you testify about? I can only assume you gave testimony regarding the value of the coins in the current market based upon certain parameters [i.e. the coins were all slabbed by one of the top TPG's and thus based upon series, date, mint and condition assigned by the TPG, you were able to provide values].

Excuse me if I am prying, but it would be interesting to hear details (even if you have to wait until after the case is over, it would be worth the wait).

Sure, I will give more information, but I think I will do it in a new thread. Don't want to hijack anyone's thread!
