Self-Insurance???

I have in the past received cards for which I paid insurance that came with a small memo saying the shipping was insured through a secondary insurance co. However, I just got a card for which I paid $2+ for insurance which came with no indication of being insured. Upon contacting the seller (a reputable seller) I was told that he insures through his own company because it takes too long for the post office to settle claims. Acyually, I have two cases of damage in 10 years and both have been settled in a month. Is this a growing trend that others have noticed? Is it legit? thanks for your input

I personally have my own insurance (Collectibles Insurance Agency). If you are a high volume seller, you can pay the premium and then some by going this route. I know 4SC has this insurance too, among others. If you have a large collection or sell a lot on eBay, I think it's definitely worth looking in to.

The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

I self insure. I don't sell a lot and when I do it's usually low dollar stuff. If someone pays me the optional $2 for insurance and they later tell me it's damaged or lost I pay them the dough. I have paid out once ($10) and probably collected from 15 or 20 buyers. I thus am ahead. Of course, I would probably refund them whether they bought the optional insurance or not but if people like to feel extra safe.... Bottom line, I have no problem with a seller telling me they self-insure. In the unlikely event a card doesn't arrive as long as I got a refund I wouldn't care who it's from.
  • Good morning:
I buy and sell an equal amount on ebay. With this said, I firmly believe that it is the sellers responsibility to make sure that the item gets to the buyer safely. As a seller, I make insurance manditory and add that amount to the total shipping price I charge. As a buyer, I don't care if the seller charged me for insurance or not, or who he deals with for insurance. All I'm worried about is getting my item in a timely fashion and in good shape.

    The bottom line:
If my item arrives damaged, I'm going to bark at bite the seller if needed regardless if insuance was charged or not.
