WTB: 1878-P VAM-81

I need a 1878-P VAM-81 Morgan to finish my B1 reverse morgan set. I would prefer it be in MS-63 or better but at this point I would take almost anything problem free. Doesn't matter if its raw as long as it can be graded by NGC or PCGS (because thats the only two Collectors-Society allows). I dont know what I have that would be of interest to anyone but I do have a few morgans graded by NGC and PCGS and cash if anyone is interested please let me know, i would like to finish this set and move on to other things. Thanks alot, Bryan

The highest graded one he currently has in inventory is an ANACS-62 for $80.
    When in doubt, don't.
  • Yes thats what he emailed me of his inventory as well, if anyone can find one better please let me know, if not I guess a 62 will atleast fill the hole until I can find an upgrade. I have two MS-62's in my collection already and have found updates for them (just waiting on them to arrive before I add them to my registry) so I am not to good for a MS-62 but the way my luck has been with NGC it may come back a AU-58 when crossed lol

Brian, the VAM 81 is not that difficult to locate in MS-63 and better. With a little patience, you should be able to find a 63/64. I've owned several MS-64's, but never held them for very long as I always knew that they were available.

  • I guess its so hard for me to attribute the VAM-81 because its not as easy to spot like the line under 8 or the double RIB or polished nostril of the VAM-84. The only two things I know to look for is a polished ear (which I have studied other VAM-81's from heritage and just have a hard time telling the difference) and a disconnected leaf on the reverse. I have bought unattributed B1 reverse morgans for upgrades of specific ones I already have like the 82 and 84 that I recently found to update the two MS-62's I have in my collection now, but this VAM-81 just seems to be very illusive to me. If you know other ways to tell the difference between the VAM-81 from say any other disconnected leaf B1 reverse I would be happy to listen. Another thing I just remembered is the die chips on the right wing but I do not have any "good" brick and mortar shops around me that I care to do business with so close to 100% of my buying is done online and its hard to get a good picture that shows this characteristic in the pictures

Brian, VAM 81 and 82 sharing b1c reverse are most similar in appearance except obverses are dramatically different. The II/I-7 obv. of VAM 81 is shared with VAMs 30 and 33, with the most prominent PUP being the overpolished profile of Liberty which shows a gap in the base of the nostril. The II/I-10 obv. of VAM 82 in most instances should be recognizable by the extensive doubling of obverse features and full definition of the base of Liberty's nostril. VAM 80 with B1b reverse always has full stem on olive branch contrary to text in earlier VAM(2nd or 3rd ed.)and can easily be discounted. VAM 84 is easiest to spot from obverse PUP of polished down L in LIBERTY. VAM 83 has very noticeable PUP of high 1 in date.
