Crack out Commens and put back in Mint Package?

I'm disgusted that 8 of my modern commemoratives came back PR67DCAM or PR68DCAM. There's no market for this grade of coin. I'm thinking about cracking them out of their holders and putting them back into original mint packaging and selling them that way. How would you view such an action? Does that qualify me as a slimeball or is this a common occurance?

Next time I'll tell them not to grade if it doesn't make PR69DCAM.

What did you spend per coin top have them graded?

I do not think I would blame you for cracking and selling. As long as I was not buying them. LOL

  • I paid "Modern" $14 each for grading. First submission--really stinks.

    POW PR67DCAM
    Women in Military PR67DCAM
    Constitution PR67DCAM
    Jefferson PR67DCAM
    High Jump PR67DCAM
    Leif Ericson PR68DCAM
    Jackie Robinson PR68DCAM
    Black Patriots PR68DCAM
    Vietnam PR68DCAM
    Special Olympics PR68DCAM
    Capitol Visitor 50c PR68DCAM

I already had Constitution, Jefferson, High Jump, Leif Erickson, Special Olympics, and Capitol Visitors in PR69DCAM so I'm wondering why I bothered to submit them.

Last week I bought PR69DCAM POW and Women in the Military.

Right now I'm keeping the Black Patriots, Jackie Robinson, and Vietnam as fillers until I can buy PR69DCAMs.

  • Read the "obligation" thread currently being discussed. It may give you some ideas to ponder. Respectfully, John Curlis
  • Alot of commemorative collectors never get their coins graded. They would enjoy them just the way they came from the mint and that's the way they still are. Nothing has changed in the condition of the coin. If somebody was buying them to get them graded and then sell for profit, I suppose I would tell them not to buy them as they were graded before.

  • Next time you submit modern commemoratives, submit them in their original plastic capsule. Don't ever remove them. I have learned this the hard way.
  • I'll take your advice on that. I'm getting ready to submit my Ben Franklins and will send them in the mint capsule. I'm also curious if these coins that I bought as sets off ebay had already made a trip to a TPG before I bought them. The number of coins not making PR69DCAM is statistically improbable. I didn't buy any of these directly from the U.S. Mint. So maybe I'm a victim of what I'm proposing to do.

As a last resort, I might give them to family members as gifts and they are clueless about what the grade means and a PR67DCAM looks just as nice as a PR69DCAM.

  • I ruined about 20 nice commems by putting them in those stupid plastic flips for submission.
They were all at least MS & PR 69s prior to submission.
    Many graded 67 - 68.
I submit all commems in the capsules now and never get less than 69s.
    Knock on wood...

While there's nothing unethical with doing this, I think you're dangerously close to slimeball territory.

    But not quite. image

I sold a 2004 Lewis & Clark PCGS MS68 to one of the nice people on eBay for $11.38 - $2 less then the melt value at the time. image

Of course then if it doesn't come back the way you want it, you don't have the original capsules to put them back into either.

If you do decide to crack them out then by all means mail the labels back to PCGS so the pop reports dont get hosed up any further. I think PCGS pays up to .50 per label but could be wrong.

Of course there is a market for those grades. Just not one were you can pay for the coin and the grading and still make a profit. It's a gamblers market and in this case you gambled and you lost.
