1972 Dolphins

I saw this set on the registry. Some of the registered sets state that this was the undefeated team. I looked through me set and saw that they lost in the Super Bowl to the Cowboys. In the 1973 Set (1972 stat year) that set has them with the Super Bowl win against the Redskins. Am I missing something here?

Just a thought for this long Monday at work

  • i just wonder how long are the dolphins gonna milk that one season? image
  • At the the time Dolphins were running the table, the 1972's were the cards in the stores. I guess that's what they were referring to.
  • The Dolphins lost the super bowl to the Cowboys in the 1971 season (the game was played in Jan. '72). The Dolphins won the super bowl over the Redskins in the 1972 season (the game was played in Jan. '73).
  • Montanafan, As long as we can! Or until someone else beats it. Sour Grapes Anyone?

72 Fins, an amazing team, an amazing coach, and they won most of the games that year with a back up quarterback, only stopped by the CFL!

The '72 Dolphins were not favored to win the superbowl. They were underdogs despite their undefeated season, based on strength of schedule (some real creampuffs in the AFC that year). Be that as it may, undefeated is tough to argue with - and tough to top (although the Patriots did recently reel off more consecutive victories image )

  • the 49ers of the late 80s and early 90s would have handed them their teal and tangerine a$$es, IMHO.... image
  • Bosox, There are certainly alot of factors that go into that season. Any team can beat any other team on any given Sunday, as the saying goes. And, it is certainly a different league now than it was then so hats off to the Pat's & Colts for almost doing it and don't forget Da Bears, who by the way were beat that season by the Dolphins. Every team has it's "great days" to think about. The nice thing about it is the Dolphins 72 team does tons of charity work and uses that season to help other constantly.

Montana, I bet Superman could beat Batman and Popeye sure could kick Caspers a$$. 1st grade or 2nd? imageimage

I still don't get it, why you would collect this set instead of the 1972 stats. If I were a Dolphins fan I would collect the 1973 set. I would compare it to collecting the Super Bowl Champions each year but collecting the cards from the year before they made it in. I am just confused.

  • The '72 set would contain the players that actually played during the '72 season. The '73 set could contain new players or not contain some key players due to retirement or trade. I don't know that this true for this specific case, I'm just speaking in theory.

I like to collect the recap cards from the following season along with the player cards from the season of the championship.

A couple examples are the '88 Fleer Twins/Cards recap cards with the red borders, along with the standard '87 Topps Team set. Same with the '92 Stadium Club Series Recaps with regular '91 Twins.

You have to collect what you like.
  • just kidding.. didn't want to ruffle anyone's feathers... i'll shut up now image
