Following the discussion in the other thread below, I'd be grateful for some input on which cards should be eligible for the proposed new set.
The basic premise is a set consisting of one card per MVP per year.

I haven't done my homework on the later years yet, but I've an idea that there's one year where Barry Bonds wasn't in the main Topps set but he is in the Update set and the cards are the same design and readily available.

As was noted in the other thread, you could see the numbers they put up to earn the MVP. I think leaving it open to any card/coin in that year should made available, too, as it lets the collector use their favorite card.
I think if you want to make the set a competitive one, with lots of interest, you leave some openings. If you want to restrict it to what one would say are their 'key' cards, then you are going to turn off a lot of collectors of the set.

Axtell: Although I agree with your logic [and personally prefer things that way], collectors generally do not. They seem to like collecting cards from the year of issue, as opposed to the following year. This follows for WS winners, MVPs, etc. Especially with World Series winners, collecting the Topps issue from the year of winning often includes players who were not on the WS roster, as well as excluding some players that may have played pivotal post-season roles. But, nonetheless, the 1968 Tigers, 1980 Phillies, etc. are all popular from that year, as opposed to the following year which not only includes their stats, but has a more representative sample of the entire team-

I would like to own a Maris one day, and my only preference is 1961 Topps. The 1962 version shows the HR total at 61, but the 1961 Topps card is the one that was issued during that eventful season. Same thing for the 56 Mantle, I already own a 57 showing his triple crown numbers but to me it is not the same as his triple crown card.
If you were collecting cards as a kid for one particular season; the culmination of the season of collecting were the teams who won (WS members) and the statistical achievements and their corresponding awards (MVP, CY Young, Gold Glove etc.)
Like Marc and Neal; I would opt for year of achievement (ie 61' T for Maris, etc.). It just makes collectors sense.

I agree and I am pleased that no one talking about "rookie" cards yet. Think Childhood. Those were the least desirable cards of any players!
