Advertising versus Spam

Hi, I would like to get to know some of your definitions of Advertising and Spam.

We surely all know since the year dot what is advertising.

Allthough Spam is defined as some message ( specifically via email ) that we daily get onto our monitors as unsolicited.

I get mail daily as you probably, trying to con me into buying whatever - is this not advertising ?

Even more so if my regular stamp supplier sends me advertising - is this spam ?

Does spam not lie in the continuing bombardment of the same article from different sources.
So an excessive amount emails unsolicited are dished up.
But then the local Stamp Dealer may send me also unsolicited mail not in excess

Is this the differentiation that can be made ? Excess versus one in a while "unsolicited" email.

Would gladly like to hear of some meaningful comments.

  • One email sent to 1000 people is advertising.

One thousand emails sent to 1 person is spam.

  • Hi Jerry,
Thanks for that easy reply, but I am afraid it is more complicated than that.

"One thousand emails sent to 1 person is spam.
In principle I agree with you. However getting 1000 emails to one person may contain 0.05% legitimate mail. The rest may be spam.

The verb spam= Send unsolicited bulk e-mails
Hardly would one entity send a 1000 emails to one person which is basically nonsense.

Should it not be about unsolicited mail !?

Again - "One email sent to 1000 people is advertising" Although it is still advertising would contain to many unsolicited mail.

Many people would lable "unwanted - unsolicited - unsought - not requested" mail as spam and I would like to get a handle about this, to educate those thinkers.

Excample:- One dear proudly had a stamp dealer fined because he sent "unsolicited mail to her as another stamp distributor. Now this sounds like really over the top as I can not see a stampdealer sending so much mail to one to make it to look like spam. Plainly unrealistic.

So how can I enlighten these narrow minded thinkers to evaluate spam versus advertising.

  • Erich! Now you got me pondering this! LOL. I'm going to think some more on it. It seems maybe it's just an individual choice.

Hi Jerry, individual choice of choosing to sort out our own spam as allowed in the email rules etc.
    OR
Holding the big stick - "Send spam and I will sue you " LOL.

There are millions of stamp exchange adverts. A few of those are repeated on various sites. I send them an advert relating to philately.

I happens that some are sent different adverts at different time s to the same collector. If one ( and I have had one) saying not to send any adverts to him it is difficult not to miss him in a session of sending adverts. Then I can only apologise to the persion complaining and telling him to ignore my email as it will certainly happen again.

I do not send out my philatelic advert to any viagra sellers. Perhaps this the route to take.
If you are a coin collector and receive coin advertising - is it spam ?
Some son recognised you as a numismatic collector and wants your business - how can that be spam ?

In fact this is the choice, you still can sort out all those of interest to you that advertise/spam their stamp product.
Those selling watches and offer you 25mil or longer penises are deleted which in fact I assosiate with pure spam.
The same thing happen in our letter box the samphlets are discarded staight away but the garage sale pamphlet the next door neighbour's daughter deposited in my letter box may get a second look-over.

I have noticed some have an ebutler - an email is received and annouces itselves to the proprietor by having to submit your email again. The proprietor may have the choice to reply or not, depends on how adamant you are to bring the message across.
Even then if you are pushing viagra to a Kindergarden you are spamming, if to the local Old Boys Club it is advertising

Where lies the criteria between advertising and spamming ?
