The Official Alf Soriano Thread

joestalinjoestalin Posts: 12,473 ✭✭
This guy is a beast every single year. He blasted 2 homers today and now has 21, right on the heels of Pujols. All this from the lead
off spot!! To think Frank Robinson wanted to bench this guy cause he didn't want to play the outfield....note to Frank...let Alf play
where and whenever he wants..you just might win a few more games!

You know its funny, ever year it seems I make this post and every year this guy busts out the whooping stick. It might be time we
call this guy real!

Agreed he is a stud. I thought him leaving Texas last year would affect his numbers and then playing in Washington's cavernous stadium would effect his output but not so.

mets could of had him for next to nothing before spring training. would be a nice 2nd baseman for us! ohh well.. missed the boat again!

He is awesome. He's been huge for me in an NL-only league this year. Got him in like the fourth round. Crazy.

  • I think what keeps Soriano from being recognized as one of the game's elite is his lack of plate discipline. He has a consistently low OBP and strikes out a lot. A lot of people look at these numbers. But I agree he'a pretty amazing hitter.

I can't buy that argument this year. He is 3rd overall in hits and has 17 walks....much better than past years. Its amazing, you knew this
guy could lead all 2nd basemen in offensive stats but look how he compares to all the OF's in the NL:

    1st in homers
    1st in hits
    2nd in slugging
    3rd in OBP

    beast!

his production has never been questioned. he has put up all star numbers every where he has been. he is not a great person in the clubhouse or as a team mate as reported in texas.i think if he was a full time DH he would have better numbers

when it comes to playing defense: he couldn't catch a crab in a whorehouse
  • joestalinjoestalin Posts: 12,473 ✭✭
funny you mention defense, another argument you can't use this year. Alf leads the majors in OF assists and I don't ever remember people
bringing up Bonds glass arm in discussions. The guy can do it all and will be THE hottest free agent if Washington decides they don't want
    to win anymore.

Is he still batting leadoff? How long before that has to change?

Its funny both the Yanks and Rangers tried moving him to 3rd or 5th but it didn't work, for some reason this guy is a born lead off hitter

  • << <i>funny you mention defense, another argument you can't use this year. Alf leads the majors in OF assists... >>

he also leads the majors in outfielder errors. last night was a good example - on offense he hit a homer run, but a run scored on his error on defense.
  • joestalinjoestalin Posts: 12,473 ✭✭
yeah but how many runs has he saved throwing guys out at third?

  • << <i>yeah but how many runs has he saved throwing guys out at third? >>

probably a good bit. the thing with assists though is that the best arms don't get many since no one runs off them. francoeur had a ton off assists last year, but now they respect his arm. teams will probably stop running on soriano if he continues to gun 'em down.

This guy was going to be one of the great 2nd basemen yankees of all time......what a mistake by my yanks i think...Arod is great player but honestly was it a upgrade??? Hard to tell

    loth
  • joestalinjoestalin Posts: 12,473 ✭✭
heck yeah it was an upgrade Arod has gotten you all how many rings (long silence).................uhhh never mind

The Yankees gave up on him after one poor showing in the postseason. At this point I would take him back over Arod, he seems to have more upside.

How many rings does Soriano have?

    (longer silence).

Joe, get that brown s**t off your nose from being up Soriano's ass and ask yourself, truly, honestly: is Arod the reason the yankees didn't win the world series the last two years?

The answer, to anyone with a functioning brain, is no.

Soriano's postseason batting averages are pathetic. .233 BA? .287 OBP? .336 SLG? Yeah, a real monster!

bri2327....yes you are right, Soriano would benifit the Yanks right now alot more than PayWad.

I really liked his tv show in 80's. He used to like to eat cats. This is the official alf thread.
  • joestalinjoestalin Posts: 12,473 ✭✭
Soriano has 14 more hits than Paywad. He has 10 more homers, 1 more RBI (from the lead off spot) than Paywad, 9 more
stolen bases. Is batting 20 points higher than paywad, and is slugging almost 100 points higher.

Alf gets 10 mil and year and Paywad gets 25.6

Even the George can't be happy with that!!!
  • I've liked the guy since I saw him beatup the minors and with his start with the Yanks. Hopefully he'll stay in town, Washington could really posterize this guy. I think he's one of the most underrated bats in the game right now.

You mean Tom Hicks i think. he is the guy paying most of paywads salary.

I think, but am not sure that he pays 67% of paywads salary. The yanks are in for 8 to 10 mil a yr.

    Steve
    Good for you.
  • AxtellAxtell Posts: 10,037 ✭✭
Joe, Arod has multiple MVPs, is a vastly better fielder as a vastly more difficult position (which he didn't even play prior to 2 years ago), and has the pressure of the NY 'fans' on his ass every day.

Soriano is a very good player, but Arod is a spectacular, once in a generation player.

I know you were singing that tune last year but Im not so sure about this year...I mean come on, The George can't be happy with what
Arod has done so far..he doesn't pay these guys to come in second, he is thinking he should have a few more rings right now with all
this beef....but no such luck! Seems after he dumped Alf things have been going downhill! It looks like the move from Texas and then
back to the East hasn't effected Soriano in the least!

Soriano once again PUNKS the Yanks. Stealing 2nd AND 3rd base off Mariano and then scoring the tying run on Posada's laim throw..is there
    anything this guy can't do???

    YANKEE KILLA!!!!

Yep, he walked, stole second, stole third, home on Posada's bad throw. He has it all. It will be scary when and if he finally matures in the head.
