Did You Ever Bid on Something...

and then immediately have a serious case of regrets?

Like a crappy feeling deep inside?

Perhaps ya bid too much?

Didn't really need the item but got caught up in it?

That kind of thing?

Mine was a T206 Cobb back in 1992 - Rotman Auctions - I bid 1100$ - and back then, that was righteous bucks!

I was relieved when I got outbid - I think my wife woulda shot me! image

    I've bid on a few 1952 Bowman Mantles where my body was having war with itself, part of me wanting to get outbid and the other part really really wanting to win it. Literally was about to throw up.

    Yes,

    A few years ago several high dollar auctions were all ending at the exact same time. I bid on all hoping to win one or two and ended up winning all five! I ended up selling two of them shortly thereafter so I didn't have a huge credit card statement.

    That is the good thing about cards though. Unless you grossly overspend, you can recoup most of your costs if you do get buyer's remorse. You can't say the same about things that nosedive in value right after you buy them (cars, electronics, etc.)

    I did that too with a Greg Manning Auction at the National in 1994 - cost me 5400$!!!

    But, I'm talking about - ya look at an item - and as Jeff said - something (outside of yourself) makes ya bid and right after - ya get a really sinking feeling inside - like - "what the heck did I just do!"

    It's a special feeling that is hard to describe unless one has gone thru it.

    edit: unless I misread your post and you had that weird feeling right after you placed all those bids?

    Oh ok, I see what you mean Mike.

    I once bought an '87 Fleer Bonds. I saw it was a PSA 10 so I figured it was perfect. After I got it in the mail, the edges on the reverse had terrible chipping. It was a terrible feeling since the card should have been an 8 or 9 and sold for much much less. I sold it for $100 less than what I paid to someone who didn't mind the chipping.

    In the auctions where I would put in a snipe bid, I make sure I need/want the card and that it's a sensible bid. So far I have avoided getting into a duel with another bidder.

    However...I have come to regret the premiums I have paid for certain cards through BIN or through a dealer site/store. No matter how nice the card is or how much I need it for a set, it is NOT worth paying a 50% premium because I will most certainly lose money if or when I re-sell the card.

    But I'm talking about the minute you committ - whether telephone auction or ebay - you IMMEDIATELY - have a stroke!?

    Happened to me this weekend...a customer from the early 90's, whom I haven't seen since then walked into my store and asked if I was still buying. Upon the, "well it depends on what you have"...have comes back in my store with 2 totes and 2- 5,000 count boxes. He says that he's remodeling the house and doesn't have room to for his stuff. He says..you remember what I used to collect...I haven't sold anything and opens a box with a Marino, Elway, Montana and Payton rookies....and says that the rest was the same...

    GIMME $500 for get dry wall and plaster and I'll sign a slip and I'm out here he says...

    I asked him if he was sure...as I really didn't have alot of time to look. He said YES..for sure...

    and with that $500 dropped and a receipt was signed and away he went.

    It was THEN that I was like ^%$# what did I just do...
    1st..I never looked at the rest of the stuff...
    2nd..it didn't really have to be his...
    3rd..I have two mortgages..store rent..and car payment due this week too...

    I almost puked!! lol

    So I called the guy..his wife answered and thanked me for taking away his JUNK that hadn't moved in 10 years...made me feel good that it was truly his...and put my mind at ease a little...

    Then I opened the boxes and started going through them....and it was then that I remembered this guy used to buy all my old left over football vending singles and broke tons of football wax....

    SOOOOO...I can sleep a little easier....there's 10K early 80's football singles to dig through...several complete sets....and more low end rookies than i know what to do with...

    It will all work out...as for the puking part...man, I'm still $500 away from paying the bills....lol

    Life a die hard collector....just can't say no!!

    Speaking of which...back in the day when Rotman's had their showroom and warehouse open....it was only a 10 minute drive to go see them....talk about temptation!!

    30$ in one of their auctions - not sure of value but in the hundreds.

    I picked up great stuff from them in the early 90s.
