When someone beats you to 100%/10.0 do you stop caring or keep building?

Just curious. I'm mainly speaking of the 1999 Bowman Chrome Baseball, where a couple guys have 100% and one is a perfect 10. I started building mine a few months ago and knew I wasn't gonna get to 100%/10.0 first but continued anyway. Is it more of a competition for you guys or just the satisfaction of getting it 100%/10.0 (or 100%/9.0 for vintage sets)?

I always say collect for your own enjoyment. If people are collecting with the sole purpose of achieving #1 ranking status, they are collecting for the wrong reasons. It's ok to strive to be #1 as long as it's not the sole purpose for collecting.

I could not say it better myself. It is nice to be #1 but sometimes you can't afford it.

The top 1999 Bowman Chrome set is not a perfect 10. It has the # 55 Eric Karros card in PSA 9.
  • I collect for fun. If I really wanted to finish my Boggs basic set I could have. I enjoy small submissions and purchasing off of ebay. And I am building my family muscle car ( FORD SHO). So that is taking my time and money.
  • when i started my 1990 leaf set there where no 100% - now there are 2 and 2 more that are very close - vintage corvette has a 100%/10.0 and is close to finishing his second 100%/10.0 - ill be happy when i finish my set in either 9/10 - itll be satisfying to finish my first PSA set even though its not the best one out there
    collecting:
    1990 leaf in (10)
    1986 topps mets (10)
    2008 ring kings cut signatures
any Darryl Strawberry, Dwight Gooden, Keith Hernandez cards in (10)

I just collect the sets I like. And sometimes I've even had to sell off some sets based on needs for my family or home repairs....for instance now I'm working on a 1973 Topps basketball set. I just like the way they look for some goofy reason....and I know I won't ever be Number 1 on the registry but I keep pluggin away at it.....and I got hooked on the 84 Donruss....luckily there are a number of other collectors out there also working on that set and I've been able to slowly build it to the point where I'm about half done....and it hasn't sent me to the poor house .......YET!!

I collect the 1999 Bowman chrome in the International parallel/version. Raw not graded, still somewhat tough.

Anyway If one truly enjoys the set, so what if someone has an equal or better set. As expressed before, collect what you like, obviously, we all would prefer having the best set out there, but unfortunately, we all can't have the number one set. I'd like a Caddy but am reasonably happy with a nice Chevy, somewhat similar with our card collections.

I agree with the "enjoyment" point . However, if someone is collecting a set with the number one spot in mind and it is as affordable as it is enjoyable for them why is that the "wrong" reasons? Since when did wanting to be the best or have the best start being considered wrong?

I agree that these shouldn't be viewed as mutually exclusive. I have some sets that I view as extremely enjoyable to have/pursue the best possible set in (whether I share top spot or not) and others that a solid grade level is sufficient even if it's lower down in the pack.
  • Gemint hit it on the head..I'm into the Rose Master Set and know there is no way I can compete with the deep pockets at #1. I collect for my own enjoyment. Not to go" NaaNaa I'm #1"

you are totally missing the point. Some DO collect for their "own enjoyment" like you do and it so happens that they do have deep pockets and can afford it. How is that collecting to say "NaaNaa I'm # 1" ???????????

    I guess I am asking this ....

Why is it that those who can afford to ENJOYABLY compete for a best set get picked apart by the guy who can't afford to? Why do the guys who cant afford these high grade big dollar sets think THEY are collecting for the RIGHT reasons? When the high grade guy is having the same satisfaction as the mid grade guy?

Is it ENVY that makes the mid grade guy think he is collecting the way you "should" ???

You misunderstood what I said. I said it's ok to collect what you like and try to be #1. I only say those who collect only to have the best set and would not collect the set otherwise is the wrong reason to collect. I guess the latter case would be a strict investment portfolio and not really a collection.
  • softparade, Those were two seperate points. Let me try again:

    1) I collect for my own enjoyment, I can't compete with deep pockets.....not picking anyone apart here
    2) I do not collect to say I'm #1 refer to statement #1...still not picking anyone apart.
    3) If you do collect to say " I'm #1" then that's up to you...I don't....still not picking anyone apart

If you can afford to buy high grade, high dollar cards then that's great. To be honest I don't care why or who collects what and for whatever reasons.
