Information please: Pics of Small "S" and Large "S" MM on 1880-S Morgans

I picked up these two Morgans and noticed quickly the size difference between the two Mint Marks.

Is there any information regarding these?

I also placed the coins next to each other for a closeup of the mint marks.

Any info. would be greatly appreciated!

  • According to The Morgan and Peace Encyclopedia both are common and bring no premium.

I think there were six different "S" mint marks used on the Morgans. They all differ. What year are your coins? The 1921-S is all the "micro S". There was a small "S" used on some 1903 coins... which have a premium (Top 100 list, VAM2).

Shoot. I was hoping for a super rare undiscovered over-sized jumbo "S" mintmark variety that no one had ever seen or even heard of before.

    I guess not. . .

  • This is so weird as I was looking at my (3) 1880-S and also noticed a large and small mint mark but did not post about it here as I had read in the VAM book about different size mint marks.......................so it was creepy seeing your post less than 24 hours after I discovered the same thing image

Yeah, I guess reading the title would help!

Two S mint marks were used in 1880.
IV S medium, rounded S with pointed serifs
VI S Very large with thick center shaft

So, are there other dates for morgans that have different size mintmarks for the same year?

Funny you folks bring up 1880-S. I had an 1880-S "craving" the other day and went down to the dealer I do business with and started looking through his box. Found the same little "s", big "S" variance that you guys mentioned, so I got one of each. The 1880 large "S" is a really nice coin to look at, even if its common.

  • Since i got the VAM book today, i'll hafta try to classify the three '80-S coins I have. image

    Update:

    I think my 1880 big "S" is a VAM 56. VAM 56 has the big "S", correct?

I think I can see a microscope with photographic capability in my future.
