MOSH Updated 290 Sets This Week--Are You Kidding Me?

I found one of MOSH's old hockey sets on the registry that was open so I could click the button on other sets he has registered. As you all know, if you have updated the set in the past week, a red updated message is posted next to the set.
Last week, MOSH updated 290 of his sets. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? This is freakin' amazing. I am starting to understand the scope of what I am up against here.
Jeremy--give me a clue here--how many people does John have buying for him?
I know the time I put into having over 200 sets on the registry--he must have 4X this. And I have the best guy in the world(Brian) who is all over my sets.
I am stunned!

A person can update a set without adding a card to it. Not saying this is what happened but it is possible.
Steve
loth
True but I don't see any reason why these all would not be added to.
Loth,
I believe John is a lawyer--many of the top collectors are lawyers--Merkle, Fogel, Branca and now MOSH.

Honestly, I expected them to win that set just as they won basically every other set that I collect, but again i think it was just Denise going through every Registered set one last time and validating to make sure all sets were current. But with so many to track, she forgot to check that the All-Time NFL Defense had players added to it a couple of months back. HOFers that MOSH already has listed in their HOF RC set, so they didnt automatically add themselves to the All-Time Defense set when the 4 new additions were made...

according to my values and my needs. Nothing holds dominion over me, I stand alone as the ruler of my life.

Are you calling my collection a tricycle?
Why do you appear so upset that someone is amassing a collection that is orders of magnitude larger than yours? Is it wrong that a person has the desire and the funds to build a truly world-class collection?
Tricycle indeed!
I disagree with your statement though. You have never seen my collection and don't know what you are talking about.

Dav has a world class collection himself.

The top guys in baseball ( merkle, louchios, fogel ) will probably not sell ...at any price unless they decide to quit altogether.
I may not like Jim all the time ....sorry Jim ..you could come off a little arrogant sometimes. But he is extremetly passionate about it and he is always willing to share to anyone and he always offers his input.
But his collection on the other hand its truly amazing...personality aside ...his collection is easily one of the top 20 most likely top 10
Jim has always had a very conservative aproach to his collecting habits ...his goals are different from other collectors.
If Jim really wanted to compete all he would have to do is sell 10% of his collections and use the extra income to upgrade his sets other sets
Groucho Marx
he can't, he is a hoarder like me. lol
Steve
Gee--i like you all the time.
I'm only a little arrogant on the boards. Ask anyone who has met me and they would not tell you that.
Who else would throw a party for all collectors, provide free food and drink and unlimited access to their card room.
Next open party may be June 17--have to get the okay from a couple of guests of honor before I confirm.

Jim,
For those of us who don't get the chance to attend this party, is there any way you could post some pictures of the room? I'm trying to picture what a card room could possibly look like with that much "material" to work with.
If you don't want pictures of your room all over the internet, that's understandable, just thought I'd ask.
Thanks,
Tom (detroitfan2)
Here's a question for you: whose sets would you rather own...Jim's or MOSH's??

Just asking because I really do not track MOSH and his efforts
Next months SMR should have plenty of pictures along with a lengthy
article on my collection.
Why do all you guys call MOSH they? MOSH is one guy!
Hey Marc--MOSH is really pretty week in 50s and before football, is non-existant in baseball and sold most of his hockey sets. Baseball is over 80 percent of my collection and he would have to bring $10-$20 million dollars to the table to be competitive on the popular sets. Does he have this kind of money?? Don't know but it is a daunting challenge. Look what Spence is spending in 55 Bowman and extrapolate.
Jim
What is impressive about MOSH at least IMHO is what he has been able to do in
a fairly short amount of time.
Seems like just a couple of years.

Jim,
If I lived closer, I'd live an invite to your "card party". However, Chicago is a little too far for a day trip . As for MOSH, what he has accomplished in his football sets is incredible. Personally, I think his greatest accomplishment is his rookie HOF set, which I've been told is his greatest passion. To have a GPA of over 8 is astounding, considering the low pops of many pre 1955 rookies.
I can't speak for MOSH, but I don't collect baseball because of the cost plus sheer size of most baseball sets. The largest football set is 528 cards while baseball is around 800..I think. Not to mention, most post 1952 football HOF rookies can be had in PSA 8 for under $1k (Namath being the major exception...and Jim Brown) whereas baseball has innumerable cards in excess of $1000 in PSA 8 condition.
Regards,
Greg M.

We will have a toast to you if the party comes off.
I think the biggest impediment is cost. As I mentioned earlier, it would take him $10-$20 million to be competitive on the mainstream sets.
My guess and that is all it is, is that he will attempt to acquire all the pre-60s football sets he does not have and be known as the King of Football and(Modern) Basketball cards. Nobody can touch Rakosi on vintage basketball.
That is a nice hobby designation.
But, I would still rather have DAV's collection.
Good point Jim, we will now call John: KOFAMBKC. Has a nice ring to it.

But to answer the original question, John is constantly being offered cards off eBay by a variety of dealers. Some of these purchases he coordinates himself while others are passed on to me. At one point I knew that there were 1 or 2 others making buying decisions but I'm not sure that's true anymore.
I say "they" and other people also say "they" when referring to MOSH because it isn't just one person doing everything, there are many people involved from top to bottom.
I'll have to look into that All Time Defense hiccup Jason. Because of the number of sets we are talking about here, and because cards are added to these sets often, overlooking additions is easy to do. Thanks for the heads up there.
