What a sad story. Never knew any of that stuff. Reading that article leads me to believe that Gibson has every right to be named along with Ruth and Aaron. Thanks for posting the link. Great start
  • Gibson called himself the Black Babe Ruth; when they were introduced to eachother, Ruth referred to himself as the White Josh Gibson.
    Collecting;
    Mark Mulder rookies
    Chipper Jones rookies
    Orlando Cabrera rookies
    Lawrence Taylor
    Sam Huff
    Lavar Arrington
    NY Giants
    NY Yankees
    NJ Nets
    NJ Devils
1950s-1960s Topps NY Giants Team cards

Looking for Topps rookies as well.

If Gibson had been allowed to play we would not have any debate about Bonds.

Put he, Ruth and Aaron in the same league and the story ends there.

Bonds would be a footnote, given that MLB will most likely find that he juiced.

A terrible waste in a time of rampant discrimination.

It makes Aaron's story more poignant. Hank will always be the man in my book unless a truly clean player breaks his record.

He batted over .400 several times throughout his career not to mention over .450 a few times as well, so he not only hit the longball but did hit for average. Many players from his league stated he would have hit more hr's throughout his career had there been fences in some of the parks where they played, opposing outfielders would play him back 400 feet. Gibson did play and hit Hr's in Yankee stadiuim, Griffith stadium, and the Polo Grounds as well, in 1937 he hit a ball that hit 2 feet below the rim of Yankee stadium about 580 feet that some estimate would have traveled 700 feet.

I quess one can only wonder how Gibson would have stacked up against Ruth if he played in the majors. It would be unfair to put Gibson's #'s against Ruth. If the situation was reversed Ruth probably could have posted similar #'s

Sadahuro Oh hit 868 homeruns in his career. Pretty immpressive # 's as well

Was barely outbid on this 1939 Gibson glass slide in the last Leland's auction. Wanted to clean up the image and make a limited number of prints for sale.

    From the auction -
"Surely one of the greatest players in the history of baseball, catcher and home run legend Josh Gibson had many triumphant seasons in the Negro League. Although he died tragically at 35 and never played in the Major Leagues, Gibson was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1972. In 1939, he signed with the Santurce Crabbers of the Puerto Rican Winter League, and is seen in this 6 1/2" x 5" negative with two teammates and a bat boy. Prints from this negative have appeared in books and articles on related subjects. Overall condition is EX, but there are two scratches along the bottom edge, which do not affect the central image.'

The baseball encylopedia did however say that he abused alchohol and was suspected of drug use, 1420 even without the huge noggin do you suspect they could have meant steroids?

Ok enough with the huge noggin BS and you got it. Seriously would love to hear some input from you or opinions on Gibson if you have any. Not looking to continue jabbing back and forth with anybody.

Seriously they may be referring to heroin also.

It was pretty big in the 30s and 40s.
  • Nice article - I didn't know some of those details.

Has anyone ever seen his autograph? I know he didn't sign much and it's worth a ton.
