How rare is rare?

Hello all, it has been a long time since I have visited the boards. It still looks the same with many new faces and ideas. Looking thru all the Registry sets I am impressed with the coin sets and new people starting and finishing them.

The question of how rare is it still comes up,

Mitch, ( wondercoin ) during the 9-11 tragedy did a fantastic job of getting PCGS to commemorate our fallen Americans with a limited addition 25c NY Firefighters MS 66 ( all coins ). This was limited to 100 coins all numbered 1 - 100, with all the proceeds going to various Firemans families in need.

PCGS came out with a great looking holder header with the American flag, I know they took it futher with coins with the same header, but was curious to all, do you consider the limited 100 rare or just another coin?

It meant a lot to me at the time as I was high bidder on the # 9 and
# 11 coin, just wanted to help the families out, thinking of parting with them now, but still reminds me of that terrible day when the world fell apart...do you cosider these coins rare?

Sorry, I don't consider these are rare coins. I consider these are PCGS created stuffs.

  • Likewise, I have zero interest in them. It was a nice idea, but sorry. I collect the coins not the slabs.

Matt: Great to see you around - it has been a long time.

What those (100) coins achieved is "rare" indeed. I believe we raised nearly $60,000 for the Widows and Orphans of the Firefighters who lost their lives in 9-11 and 100% of the proceeds from the sale/auction of those coins went directly to the charity. That is what makes these coins "rare". I would hope that one day, these (100) coins could continue to be auctioned off with the proceeds of the future auctions of the coins also going to charity. These coins have really "good karma" about them and, hopefully, they will continue to do well in the years ahead, rewarding their owners for the charitable acts surrounding them.

The coins inside the holders are not rare.
The holders and the coins, together, represent an unprecedented, selfless act of some 100+ people from these boards, their friends and families, and the PCGS ownership and employees, who for only charitable reasons spent their time and money to create 100 specially holdered coins with the sole purpose of providing a small contribution to a special group of victims of a horrible tragedy.
These holdered coins are finding ways to keep on giving, in the form of remembrances of the tragedy of 9-11-01, through continued references here, and quietly in time, by the subsequent continued gifting to museum and memorial displays. The coins are also finding their way to the families, friends and aquaintences of the 9-11 victims, and to other firefighters.
There is great value in these coins/slabs, although the value may not be readibly quantifiable in terms of dollars.
I will always hold tremendous pride and respect for those involved who donated their time and money in this group-effort to provide so generously to the children and widows of the dedicated firefighters who dutifully responded to the tragedy, and lost their lives on 9-11-01.
  • I think of those coins as a positive aspect of a very horrible tragedy. Perhaps only because I live close by
WTC but the way people helped and gave of themselves was tremendous. The value in that coin and holder
is that it reminds me of these things and the good attributes of the people that participated here and in the
    NY/NJ area.
  • Yes when we think about it they are " rare " in what we created for people who needed to see that the country really cared about what had happened to them. A MS 66 25c is not a rare coin. Guess we could call it a semi rare created slab....

I would like to donate them, or auction to raise more money for the cause, but would prefer to have them on display if possible somewhere that could be fitting of the rememberence. So if anyone has any great ideas would love to hear them....

Mitch, Registery Coin, great to see you guys still help this place keep going, Pat ( Braddick ) I know you will be here soonimage, hope all is well with you guys....

    Hey Matt image

Only thing I can say here is the few 9/11 coins I purchased ment alot to me, strictly because the money generated would be benifiting people I interacted with on a daily basis. Living 55 miles from Manhatten, I spend alot of time there, and have too numerous friends down there to count. I cannot name one of them that wasnt affected in one way or another by that days events. What Mitch and others involved did with that charity event was *stellar* IMHO, and I was glad to be a small part of it.

Good to see you back Matt. I miss talking Kennedys with you!
Your quarters are heirlooms that should not go cheaply.

I'd imagine 1K would be a starting price, easily, for the pair.
