Any help appreciated

One of the fellows in the US Coins area suggested I post over here so I am. I think this is a token or imitation coin. It's about 1-1/2" across, 1/8" thick and 3-D on the face side that sticks out another 3/32" and it appears to be bronze and is in near perfect shape for something circulated. It is palpably heavy. It's a nice piece whatever it is. It has Greek writing on the reverse (hope it shows in the scan). It is not "round," it is irregular, like a real ancient but it just doesn't seem like it could be an authentic ancient because of it's condition and the 3-D quality to it. I don't know about much outside of mostly modern American coins.

Anybody have any clues what this is? Any help appreciated.

  • Please post a pic. That will be better.
  • I thought I attached a pic. Let me check. I don't know how to actually put it in the post, just how to attach it.

Ancient coins, particularly the Greek and early Roman series, go have quite a strong 3D effect - much more so than modern coins. I guess they just weren't designed with "stackability" in mind. image

  • AH, finally figured out how to get a pic into the message body. Pic is there now. Any help appreciated. If it's a real coin, it's in really good shape for its age.
  • Seems the server with my "maybetoken.jpg" picture on it is down and nothing is showing up right now. Sigh. I'm resigned to never knowing what this is. Anybody wants to take a stab at it, it's got Greek lettering on it and it's large and heavy and 3-D, with a silouhette head on the obverse, and 4 horses over the greek lettering on the reverse. It's dark bronze and in great shape. It could be real or a token, I don't know. I will email pics to anyone who can give this a shot unless the server comes back up soon.
