Best $5.00 reading fun in a long time

I was at a new card shop that opened recently (yes new card shop) and while looking around found a mint condition of Baseball Cards 1988 magazine with Mantle insert cards and interview. If SCD wants to make their weekly better, they should review what made this magazine such good reading. The flow of the magazine as well the article content was awesome. The Mantle article spanned 10-12 pages and his ancedotes were priceless. I read it from cover to cover and went back in time. Reading this rag made you want to collect!
Dealer prices were sick! Larry Fritsch had 3rd series 72 fb sets for 240.00 postpaid and 1980-81 bsk sets for 12.50,The Card King had 1986 fleer bsk sets for 35.00 and a 1981 topps fb set for 20.00.Texas Sports Cards had a 1972 topps bsk set for 139.99,ScoreBord had autographed Mark McGwire balls for 18.50. Mid Atlantic Coin Co had the comple run of 1980-87 football sets for 99.00 and to top it off Jim Elder cards had 1975 topps baseball rack packs for 28.95 or 2/56.95. These were just a few packs and sets that make me wonder that if we had so much of this stuff 18 years ago so cheap, and even though it dried up,there must still be a ton of it out there and prices could be a bit over inflated now. The classified were interesting too. People were buying Mike Greenwells for 1.00 and Greg Jeffres for 1.50, and Devon White cards for 20 cents. W.F. Sports was buying Cansecos for 10.00. I also was amazed that some 1980s products have held up afer time such as 1987 Donruss rack cases for 179.00 and 1985 Donruss wax boxes for 109.98 If you have a copy of this magazine , pull it out and it will make you feel like you opened up a vintage pack of cards...

  • I buy 1989-1990 magazines looking for Bill Ripken FF articles and I too see am amazed at the same things. I like the ads of the 1975 Topps racks with stars on top. Older wax was definately cheaper. I have seen McGwire autos for around $20 as well. Amazing as I read recently he is a tough signer. I guess fame does that. Sometimes I get magazines and teh previous owner had circled what they wanted to buy or did buy. Those 1987 K-Mart sets never did pick up. One person wrote "buy 20" next to it.

If you come across any 89-90 magazines I still am missing some articles. I have over 20 and dont know what I need except 2 issues of Tuff Stuff and a SCD I think.

    Happy Hunting,Donovan
