Unopened Product - What to Do?

I have a few boxes of unopened stuff that I bought when it was new, and just never opened. It's nothing mind blowing, just late 80s early 90s stuff.

Should I crack them open, and hope for some 10s of stars?

The boxes are:

1994 Score series 2
1990 donruss
1990 topps
1991 topps (not wax, not sure what type)

Any ideas? I know the cards raw are going to be nearly worthless, but any input would be appreciated.

All junk wax that won't be worth anything 100 years from now so rip it or start a fire with it.
1992 Score had the Mantle autos. I ripped a case a few months back and it was painful although I did get a Yaz auto.
  • If you get any Bernies graded; I'm looking for a 10. Ditto with Chipper in the 91. I have multiples of both ungraded but I don't see a 10 in the lot of them.
    Collecting;
    Mark Mulder rookies
    Chipper Jones rookies
    Orlando Cabrera rookies
    Lawrence Taylor
    Sam Huff
    Lavar Arrington
    NY Giants
    NY Yankees
    NJ Nets
    NJ Devils
1950s-1960s Topps NY Giants Team cards

Looking for Topps rookies as well.

It's always fun to open packs but those are some tough years - so over, over produced.

    My recommendation...

Start with a cold Bud, a large sausage, pepper and onion Pizza, a quart of Rocky Road, a backup sixpack
and a large table - and have a good time!

If you find anything good - please scan and post?

    Good luck

1991 was the 40 year mark for Topps and they had vintage inserts in packs

Open. It's not worth filling space in your house with that stuff. Open, take out the 5-10 cards worth keeping and throw the rest away. At least that's what I do.
  • I've recently opened some 1990 topps. Although it's worthless, I like the card design. As I was ripping a few packs the other day I got to thinking about the rookie crop in the 1990 topps set. Frank Thomas, Sammy Sosa, Larry Walker, Albert Belle, Juan Gonzales and Bernie Williams just to name a few. Second year Randy Johnson, Gary Sheffield, Craig Biggio and Curt Schilling. Had this not been as massivly overproduced set it would have been a very collictable product.

I say rip away, what do you have to lose.

    Thanks for the replies.

I'll start ripping them this weekend, and if anything interesting comes up, will post the results.

The '91 Topps and OPC are great sets. I bought a few boxes of each a few months ago. A great design and EXTREMELY tough to find perfect 10's.

    You got me to thinking...

    OK, no wise remarks!LOL

Wasn't it actually determined that the NNOFs were a "back door" item and never actually made it into packs?

    Ax,

rip those puppies! You might get some nice gem cards and nothing beats opening packs. Who knows, you might want to complete one of those in sweet raw in a binder. image

Ax, I agree with softparade. Open them and try to make a set. Then if you want, give the doubles and/or the set to a youngster in your family. Its a great way to get them started in the hobby. Either way, have fun ripping!

Build a house of cards and post for all to see.....

better yet Ax, build two towers for us, then throw a model plane into it so we can come up with some outlandish conspiracy theory as to how it was imploded from within. We will provide you with eye witness accounts of the accident from engineers who saw it and attest to the conspiracy.

Boo, did you happen to catch Ax and his theory on 9/11 and the twin towers ? If you didnt I suggest you go check it out before passing judgement on whether or not I am above anything. Watch the towers burn from across the river in person, while a family member and acquantances perish, then have some idiot tell you it didnt happen because of a plane crashing into it. Maybe after all that you too might be a little peeved and not quite " above the fray "

    1) Yes, I did catch his theory on 9/11
    2) Yes, I agree it's a crackpot theory with no obvious basis in fact.
    3) So what? I didn't see anything in Axtell's theory that mitigated the the tragedy. It was just a attempt, however strange, to explain the events. With that in mind I fail to see why you would get emotional about it, no matter who you know that died.

Take this analogy. My own father passed away from an apparent heart attack a year ago Feb. If someone from his neighborhood was to come up with a theory that he was in fact poisoned by an angry neighbor, why in the world would I take offense? There's nothing offensive about alternative explanations unless they also work towards dismissing the impact and feelings of loss that were experienced by those involved.

Why would other opinions on 9/11 get anyone fired up? The world is full of half-baked ideas. Surely some off the wall theory about a governmental conspiracy behind 9/11 can't be any more ignorant than believing human beings were molded out of clay by an omnipotent and omniscient entity that lurks somewhere in the cosmos, or any of the other bewildering ideas which have no empiricle foundation that people hold so sacred.

Boopotts- First of all, I'm sorry for your loss. If I were in your shoes with your analogy, I would be upset. That analogy suggest murder, which isn't a proper comparison for your fathers passing.

But the tragedy, that was 9/11 was murder. People who take opinions and shape them into facts, or worse lies, do get me fired up (but just a little bit). Now 9/11 affected me directly, so I'm conscience not to let that fact get me too emotional when I discuss the event with others and to keep an open mind.
But these same theories/that get promoted as facts are insulting. They have no basis in reality and reek of the same distasteful bias as those people who now claim that the Holocaust never happened. I'm not Jewish and wasn't around during WWII, but that fires me up too.
I don't think this message board is appropriate for this subject, so I'll stop posting.

First off-- Thank you, Frank, for your condolences.

I don't see how hair brained ideas about 9/11 compare to stupid idea that the 'Holocaust never happened'. Ideas like Axtell's are alternative explanations , which is far, far different than denying that something happened. The only thing these ideas have in common is a commplete lack of empiricle support. Axell has never said that 9/11 didn't happen, or that the people who died 'deserved it', or anything of the sort. He agrees (I think) that it was a tragedy, but disagrees (for reasons that aren't clear to us here) that Osama Bin Laden was behind it.

Boo, I really think you are barking up the wrong tree here. Ax made it very clear that he KNEW engineers who were there, and claimed the towers fell from being imploded within. He went further into a tirade of ignorance, blaming all sorts of people and groups, including elaborate if not completely assanine theories. IF you cant see how that is highly offensive to people and undermines the tragedy that occured then I really dont know what to think. He posted outright lies, and later, after much debate admitted it was personal opinion and not fact. By him claiming the planes hitting the towers were not what brought them down he was denying a very, very real fact. In all honesty I am very surprised at you for choosing this topic to get all worked up about. Are some of us not allowed to be offended by his remarks and respond accordingly when given the chance ?

    bri-

I am going to say this as a concerned individual-

seek therapy. Immediately. As was posted, how did my comments disrespect those who perished?

You whine and complain about every sports thread dissolving into yankee 'bashing', yet here you are running your yap. You're an idiot.

As far as the cards go, been slowly opening them, pulling stars, going to go back over them with a loupe to see if there's anything worth submitting. I am going to assume that anything less than a 10 would be a waste of time and money in submitting, given the massive abundance of these cards?
