What award are you most proud of if you got one & who are you happy to see in 2nd place

I am most proud of my James Lofton Master set. I've got 2 one of one's of the highest graded cards and a total of 7 of the highest graded. The set is rather small, 27 cards but there are some real tough ones to get. 1983 Packer Police Set (I have the highest PSA 9). 1985 Nike Football (Mine graded ???? Authen). 1985 Box bottom. I have a half dozen raw but none above a PSA 4.

I have another 25 cards to add to this set at home once I get them graded.

As for who I am happy to see in 2nd place. Well anywhere MOSH is in 2nd is an acomplishment by the leader. But I would say 1972 Football Dolphins Team.

I was going through that today and saw Paul Deal got bumped to 2nd by .03. Paul and JR spent some serious dough the past two months beating up on each other. JR snuck his set in yesterday with a couple of hours to go. He has a 9.244 with 6 10's and only one 8.
I just never got along with Paul through Ebay. He is not the most honest guy and has had well over six Ebay usernames because he get's neg'd for being Paul. So, here's to JR.

Congrats to all on your awards!!!

I am in first place for one set - '77 Burger King Yankees.

Its a small set but it makes me happy since I self submitted 17 of the 24 cards including two POP 1 PSA 10s, it is the only complete set on the registry (I did not request it), and it brings me back to when I was 11 and first became a baseball fan and a Yankee fan. I still have the set I got back in '77 and the Jackson and Piniella cards in my registry set have been with me since '77.

    Hey Steve,

It is not just for a piece of paper. I grew up in Green Bay and grew up on Lofton and Lynn Dickey. It means a little more to me than most for this set.

Would the set(s) mean any less to you if it wasn't for the GPA competition?

    Steve,

I think he answered the question already. If you're a true collector yourself, I'm sure you've heard the expression "pride of ownership" ? Why are you giving him a hard time here?!

    Thanks Steve,

I could not have said it better myself. I met Lofton when I was a kid. I am a Packer Fan. My wife and I gave each other Packer Tattoos for our wedding gifts. I am die hard. I am a nerd. And I am damn proud of it.

I know that, I can really appreciate the love for the sets. I just couldn't figure out how it relates to the discussion of a .03 bump or a score of 9.244. I love my 1957 set and it's grade somewhere between a 6 and a 7 and I couldn't tell you (or care) where it ranks. I wish, though, I was fanatical about a team or a player because I think team or player sets are cool. At this time of year, however, I wish there were less talk about the love for the holders (and what's on them) and more on the love for the cards themselves.

I'll shut up, I've been cranky all day.

As a friend of mine used to report to the UP/AP every half inning for the Angels when Carew was there, I pretty much got see him every home game for free and met him too many times to count. It's not just the card. It's the man. Give me one player today that can place hit the ball anywhere he wants. And i mean place hit. Two men who could just recently retired over the last several years. Wade Boggs and Tony Gwynn. Only if Carew was playing today!! OMG his avg would be around .600 with this watered down pitching!!

But he could never hit Mike Boddicker!!

Sorry had to get that in! image

Never have understood how Boddicker owned him. Seems each player has that one guy that just gives them fits.
  • Buc,
I want a shot at this one. Yes ! All for a piece of paper. And here's why I think.
There are often hundreds or even thousands (or more) of complete sets for given issue. There is nothing that really distinguishes one from another. Each and every owner takes pride in their set and they enjoy it. That is why they have it. But every year, one and only one sets is picked to be singled out for recognition as different from the rest. It is the best. Certified by an independent third party to be the best set that year for that issue. It is special. Some collectors take extra pride in that recognition. Some would not. But for those who do take pride in the extra benefit, the difference between first and second is about six places.

I'm proudest of this one, 1959 Morrell Meats Dodgers - every card was self-submitted and I understand the #2 set was also completely self-submitted. I hear the #2 guy is a real jerkwad, though.

My 1995-2005 Fanfest sets. The cards are simply gorgeous. My 1957 Milwaukee Braves team set is also very special because my dad was a scout for the team then and signed Bob Buhl and Red Murff, who contributed greatly that year.
