Well it's June. Any NEW information on the golden Bisons lately?

The last time I looked the Mint still didn't have these on their upcoming products list.

They probably can't figure out a price for them. Do you think they will fluctuate with the market price real time?
  • It's an interesting situation. It would make no sense to price the more pure Bison coin cheaper than what the GAE's are currently priced at, and no one thinks the Mint will actually lower the price on the GAE's now that the price in gold has been dropping. So what do they do? Revise all their gold pricing at the time of release of the golden Bisons? Change nothing and price the Bisons the same as the GAE's? Price the Bison's a tad higher than the GAE's to reflect their 24kt, and maybe sales suck because that cost is too high?

The mint state buffaloes will fluctuate with spot prices because they'll only be sold by authorized dealers.
The proofs on the other hand, will be overpriced by the Mint as usual.

I'm just curious whether the Mint will ignore the law and not have them out by the 22nd. (The law that authorized them required that they be available within six months of the passing of the law. The law was signed Dec 22nd so the six month deadline in June 22nd.) So far all they have said is tat they will be available "This summer".
  • There are some products they never even put on their release date list. You have to sign up for their email newsletter to hear about the release... cm

My coin purchases are on hold until this one is released. I have been saving for it and I am waiting for pricing and ordering info. It's actually been kind of nice to not be spending for a while but I wish they would offer up some official word on pricing and dates already. I'm interested in the non-proof version.

My guess is they will work within the law but not fully. We'll probably get some kind announcement before June 22nd but that's all. Maybe they'll do a ceremonial pressing to have it "official" within the date requirement.

BTW, I was thinking it would be cool to get one put in a NGC multi-holder next to a 2001 bison dollar and a nice original bison nickel. If the mint packaging is nice though, I may leave it alone. Anyone else have "plans" for theirs?

  • Major - i was thinking about the same thing. the mint blinked and priced gold at the absolute top.
now they've kind of painted themselves in a corner for these buffalo's.
only right thing to do is to reprice the GAE imo. they can't follow daily spot. they should set aside the gold
and mark it up some at the price they paid for it and then let the chips fall where they may.
i think they got greedy trying to cash in on the run up.

i would also like to buy the uncirculated. once i receive it, i'll hunt down a graded ngc example
to match my silver buffalo's. then i'll sell my uncirculated raw.
never thought of the multi holder, that's a good idea

Perhaps the Mint will begin taking orders for the collectors versions by June 22, for delivery "later," and thus officially meet the June 22 deadline.
I understand that they are having trouble getting the .9999 fine planchets, since no U.S. refinery will fabricate them. Rumor has it that the blanks are being fabricated in Australia, from U.S.-mined gold shipped down under, but I do not know that to be a fact. Would make more sense to have the RCM do it.

OK, I've been living in the dark lately. What are these going to be? Are they based on weight like GAE's and is there a rough sketch or picture someone could post? Thanks

Can someone please post that generic write-up about these Bisons for Cartman here?

It doesn't really matter to me what the price is as it relates to 1 coin. $770, $885, not a huge difference. If I can afford to spend almost 800 for something to sit in the safe I can afford another 100+.

However, it greatly effects me buying in any quantity. I'll buy one and only one if the price is the same as the AGE.

  • I believe CoinWorld indicated that the Proof version would be sold by the Mint and the non-proof (bullion) version to be sold through it approved sellers, as the bullion Silver Eagles are sold !

What I don't understand is the whole "US mined" limit. Why put such an artificial constraint on something which is a global commodity? I don't understand. Are AGEs supposed to be made of "US mined" gold too?

If not, this sounds like a sweet deal to congressmen in gold-rich states, but it disconnects the price of the coin from gold spot prices. I.e., if there's demand for, say, 2,000 coins but only 1,000 can be produced in the US at spot, and the other 1,000 will have higher production costs (i.e., those mines would not have been in operation under normal market condition), then the price will go up materially over spot.

All that to say that the bullion version could well end up being priced to distributors higher than the 3% over melt currently used for the 1 oz AGE.

They are one ounce coins of .9999 fine gold (GAEs are only .9167). They have a nominal face value of $50. As to the design, no actual models have yet been released, but you can expect it to look kind of like a big gold Buffalo nickel.

More like a gold, slightly smaller version of the Buffalo dollar since it has the mandated IGWT and the weight and fineness on it. Athough the drawings they had in Coin World (Not official drawings) several weeks ago were an improvement over the buffalo dollar since the legs were again in proportion and not the stubby "dachound" legs that were on the dollar coin.

I dont think they can do anything until they bring the GAE prices back in lineimage. With a spot today of $628 nobody but die hards would buy the GB's. They were talking $900+ for the GB before this whole movement of gold prices started by comparsion and ratio's that will put the GB at $1100+.
