very rare Lincoln

I've been looking through someone elses collection, and came across an envelope that said very rare. I excitedly opened it to find a lincoln wrapped in wax paper that had VERY RARE written on it too. Even more excited now I unwrapped a 1935-d. No noticeable doubling mint errors etc. I am in utterly confused now. Does anyone know of a very rare 35-d? I'll take pics if there is a variety, but I am sceptical.

Maybe it was bought at a swap meet.

the collection was his fathers who passed away in 84. Apparently the dad was a fairly serious cent collecter I have gone through 3500 indians in the past week. I can only surmise that the son didn't know what to look for and thought it was rare.

...or maybe the envelope was swapped with the one with the 58 DDO in it?!?

Maybe the "very rare" one got replaced by a "not so very rare" one sometime during the last 20 yrs.

    That's what I was thinking.

Of course it's very rare. In fact it is unique! It is the only one of its kind (or of any kind) in that wax paper!

Everyone is missing the fact that it is the WAX PAPER that is very rare and not some silly coin.

Could it be a condition rarity? RPM?

There should be another piece of paper with it the says either "FROM ESTATE" or "L@@K"
  • The wax paper should also quote the CU price guide price.

It's one of those coin lots that you buy on Ebay. "Inside one of our envelopes, wrapped in wax paper you might find a rare lincoln" Bid now, Bid often, yes, you might be a winner. 1000 envelopes available, take a chance......

All of the coins were gone through in 1984, and have sat in boxes since. They were all in envelopes bearing the 84 New Orleans world fair logo. The son (non-collector) went through it then and left it in boxes. He isn't hurting for money, and the reason he got his collection out is he saw me checking out some coins at my desk.

The 35-D has a known doubling (slight) on the reverse which shows as a thickening in the "E PLURIBUS", and three slight RPM's.

I don't know how rare any of these are.

  • What kind of condition is the coin in? Does it have full redness?

If the coin is in top condition with full RED characteristics, perhaps that is why the dad noted it as rare.
