Where are the Gold Buffalos?

ledzep87ledzep87 Posts: 1,108 ✭✭✭
It should be available REAL soon, but I can not find any info from the mint-like prices, pictures, etc.......

If I remember correctly, it should be released by mid June-right?

Great transaction with: Relaxn, Collectorcoins, OKCC

The Mint is saying this summer sometime www.usmint.gov? Coinworld said that it would be in June as that being the deadline given to the US Mint. I bet that they are still wondering what kind of price they will charge. I think this will be the first .999 gold coin the US Mint has produced?
  • I don't know when they will be available but according to THIS ARTICLE
they will NOT be available directly from the US MINT!

We shall see if that's true or not....

Apparently you can sign up at that site to be notified when it is released!
  • The Proof & Special Matte finish specimens WILL be available to the public directly from the US Mint. The bullion (IE Gold Eagle) version will not be available directly from the Mint.

    Thanks for clearing that up!

According to the law passed for these they must be made available for sale by 06/22. I dont know what the hold up is. IMO, the mint has put themselves in a corner by raising the GAE's prices and now that the spot price of gold has slipped they are afraid of pricing the Buffalo right out of the market except for die hard must have collectors. It has to go for more than the 1 oz. GAE, that would put it over the $1K mark.

The gold buffalo was a neat idea, but I don't think it's going to happen.

I think the Mint is between a rock and a hard place on these. They still have the GAE's available except the 1 oz, which sold out on the singles but are still available in the 4 coin set. If they price the GB's to low everyone will be on board and the GAE's could suffer in sales. If they price the GB's to high they could get stuck with a coin that I am sure they are counting on a sell out. IMO they have to reprice the GAE's back to the pre-gold spike and the introduce the GB as they had talked abut in the $900 range, if not we are looking at $1100+ for the GB, if they even bring it out.

We heard about the test strikes but that was the last anyone heard about the GB's. Either they are going to release these with little or no fanfare or they are not going to release them at all. I am looking for a repricing before I am a buyer.

We just heard from our bullion supplier, one of the official Mint outlets, and they will be receiving their gold Buffalos on June 22. They are selling them to us at the same rate that they sell us gold eagles, which is 3.75% over spot for quantity purchases. We do not yet know how they will be packaged.

But in an advertisement any info should be considered questionable until it is verified from other sources. Do you believe all claims you read in advertisments? I guess a lot of people do. That's why we get all those commercials for "Natural Male Enhancement" image

I have heard that the Gold Buffalo PCGS MS-69 coin will be priced approx $25 over current spot. Based on todays spot that would be approx $632(price based on 40 coin minimum).

Disclaimer: I am not selling nor am I promoting the sale of these coins in anyway, info to be used for informational value only.

And here is an ebay 'presale' for the proof ones: Ebay link.

I have no vested interest in this auction or these sellers, though I have bought the occasional small item from them. I usually stay away from their BINs as the prices are often a tad high (their auctions are okay, but get overbid like many ebay gold auctions do). I've even ordered off their website, but comparing their prices on the Aussie Lunar golds for example... I can do better elsewhere. But they are (so far) nice and reliable sellers so I'm guessing they know something image.

Well, as $600 even spot, the Mint is selling the coins in 500 coin lots to distributors at $18 over spot (3%). My cost on them is $22.50 over spot (3.75%). I don't know how I am going to get them into PCGS holders and sell them for $25 over and make a profit.

They can be had Here for $25 over spot in PCGS MS69 holders if you wanna spring for 40 of them.

One should not pay much over spot for these. They are bullion gold and will be exceedingly common.
  • coinnut86coinnut86 Posts: 1,592 ✭✭✭
Well then if that is the case, are there going to be people on here who would go in on that 40 coin minimum?

I would consider purchasing one if that is the case
    image
  • TheNumishTheNumish Posts: 1,628 ✭✭
I think this is how someone is able to sell PCGS coins at spot + $25.

You buy 500 coins and send them to PCGS. If 5% grade MS-70 that would be 25 coins. My guess is when the coins are just out and hot you can make $1,000 profit on each MS-70. If this person sold the remaining 475 coins at $25 over spot they would lose about $7 a coin so that works out to be $3,325. Assuming that this person can sell the 500 coins in a month the interest charge is $2,500.

    Profit on the MS-70's $25,000
Lose on dumping the MS-69's $3,325
    Interest expense $2,500
    Profit on the deal $19,175

If less then 5% of the coins grade MS-70 they make less. If the coins aren't worth as much as I figured they make less. Any way you look at it I think the person will make good money on this deal.

Do you think they're really selling Proof pieces, or is that ebay-ease. The mint hasn't released any info on proofs that I'm aware of.
  • aficionadoaficionado Posts: 2,309 ✭✭✭

$750 for the proof may not be so great. If gold goes to $500, not a good deal, gold goes to $1000, good deal.

A lot will depend on the number of Proof mintage. They had 12,000 Eagles, lets hope it is less than that.

I dont think the mint will pass on a cash cow like this one. It's almost a certainty it will sell out. I think it ewas in the law that there would be PR and BU I thought there was a third but I am not 100% certain.
