Tim Liston's AMAZING Lincoln Matte Proof Set!

I had the pleasure of meeting Tim Liston and viewing his Lincoln Matte Proof Sets. They are listed on the Registry as Liston One and Liston Two under Matte Proof Lincoln Sets. I'm very challenged with the computer, so if someone else can do the link, that would be great. Anyway, Tim gives a rather conservative description of his sets. We reached a deal and he sold me Liston Two, which is a beautiful set in it's own right, but Liston One is nothing short of amazing! The colors are mind boggling! The entire set is in old green holders as most of the set was put together 10 to 12 years ago. The 1915 67BN needs to be seen to be believed, an amazing Green/Blue. This set needs to be photographed and shared. He has a photograph of the 1916, but it really doesn't do the coin justice. Thanks, Tim, for a great afternoon checking out your collection. I don't mind having the second best Red/Brown Lincoln Matte Set, especially when I know now what the best is! Congrats on a wonderful collection.

Dan

Thanks Dan for purchasing Liston Two. You bought yourself an excellent set at a fair price. I know you are going to re-register it as soon as I can get it released, perhaps with some of your RD coins. I do hope you keep it together though, and find the 1914 to improve it. That should be easy enough, the 1914 is the most populous matte proof cent in 66RB. The set you bought is well-matched and PQ, and I hope it stays together even if not in the registry. I worked hard to put that set together.

And thanks for your kudos on Liston One. You are the only other person who has seen that set. I have discussed my feelings about the “red brown” designation on this forum before, usually at Doug's urging. RB matte proof cents are still undervalued. Liston One is a unique and amazing set. How many sets of ANY denomination are all colorfully toned and all in old holders?

There are only 16 matte proof cents in RB that could improve the registry rating of Liston One. How many of them do you suppose are colorfully toned? And in old holders? Probably none, maybe one or two. If you had $1,000,000 you could not duplicate this set. Unless of course you bought mine. And if it was for sale, I wouldn't take even full RD money for it. It's just as pretty and (because of the color) MUCH rarer than a RD set of the same grade. I feel privileged to own this set as I am not a wealthy person. Just a person who made the effort many years ago to assemble this set. FYI it cost me about $12,000 back then to assemble Liston One. image

As for pictures, I would take any recommendations you have. I would be as nervous as hell at the thought of shipping the set anywhere. But Liston One (and Liston Two, which will live on in the all-time finest list) deserve pics.

Stewart, as for the purchase price. Dan paid right around what this set would command at auction (before the juice) in my estimation. All of us who are into the matte proofs (especially RB) have been watching the Long Beach auction and of course we all know the PCGS price guide is way low on some of these coins, particularly the VDB and in my opinion also the 1916. Frankly, I probably could have gotten more had I worked harder but Dan has been chasing the set for months and flew from CA to OH to purchase them. He deserves to be its next owner. There is no way any of these coins would downgrade and there are three solid upgrade candidates in the set in my opinion, including the 1916.

Thanks again Dan for your kind words. I'm glad you got back to CA safely.

My congratulations to both of you gentlemen also.

My ownership of all nine of the Lincoln Matte Proofs is a thrill for me.

I agree with Tim that the PCGS price guide needs to be revised upward. As an example, take the 1909VDB in Red Brown. The PR64 is listed at $6.650, the PR65 is listed at $9,500 and the PR66 is listed at $20,000.

At Long Beach right now, a PR64 in NGC BROWN is at $8.050, a PR65 in PCGS RB is at $17,250 and a PR66 in PCGS RB is at $29,900. It will be interesting to see if these coins are bid up higher at the auction later this afternoon.

    Tim -

That's a tough one. No one in their right mind would send a set like this via USPS, UPS or FedEx!!! The sentimental aspect of a collection is something that you simply cannot put a value on, IMO. I would imagine that it would cost an arm and a leg to have a co. like Brinks take it out to PCGS on the west coast. In the past, I have heard other set owners here on the boards talk about hiring them to transport their coins/sets to and from shows...so maybe they will chime in and enlighten us all. It may be cost prohibitive...but I think it's the only way I personally would have a set transported. The one thing I do know is that Phil Arnold would do a fantastic job with your coins...particularly with catching the colors as we all saw with the #1 Ike Set that he photographed. Man, if you can figure it out, it would be really cool to see! image

    Good luck!

P.S. Doesn't PCGS pedigree/reholder the top 3 or top 5 sets for free? If you send them in, you could kill two birds with one stone?

Thanks everyone for all the nice comments. I spent some time looking at the coins again last night before taking them to the safe deposit this morning. I'm really pleased with the set. Thanks again Tim. The set will be split up temporarily and merged with my other Mattes, but my goal is to eventually complete a Matte set in full red and reunite the red/brown set down the road. Time will tell.

I should have my complete Lincoln Registry Set posted tonight. It will be the first PCGS Complete Lincoln Registry Set to reach 100% completion, a feat I am very proud to attain, and obviously could not have attained without the assistance of many. I'm not going to list everyone as I surely would forget several (those who know me know how dreadful my memory is) and I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings because of my forgetfullness (is that a word?). However, I must mention Andy Skrabalak, my good friend and assistant in building this set. Thanks so much Andy! I never could have done it without your help and guidance.

I hope to have photos posted of the set by the end of the year. I'll let everyone know when I get that done.

One other comment. For those who may be wondering, I didn't complete this set just to turn around and auction it off. I'm a collector and I intend to enjoy and continue this set for many years to come, with the Good Lord's Blessing.

    Thanks Again to All image

Its great to read such positive news! Thanks for sharing the details of the transaction as many times we wonder what happened when a set drops off the radar.

Congrats on the sale and purchase. I have been dying to see pics of those coins.

I would also recommend Phil for imaging. See my sigline for an example of his work. All but one of the photos are his.

Congratulations on an unbelievable accomplishment Dan. I rarely ever look at the Complete Lincoln Registry Set because I do not participate in it. WOW. The strength of your set is frightening and knowing WHO you deal with, I'm sure each and every coin is outstanding for it's grade. It's also great to hear that you intend to enjoy the set for years to come.

OK so how do I get ahold of Phil or someone who could take the pics. I would be willing to have them taken here in the Cleveland area and pay handsomely for someone to fly here. Maybe could ship some equipment ahead of time and Phil or whoever could fly here? I'd LOVE to post pics....

    Tim,
You can contact Phil and the PCGS "True View" group by clicking on "True View" from the main screen and sending an email. You could also phone PCGS. For the BEST pictures possible of your Matte Proofs, I would imagine that they would want to do the job at their place in California and it might be cost efficient to use Brinks or some other transport to get the coins there and back. The thrill of being able to see your coins whenever you want on the internet and being able to share their beauty with all of us on these boards is probably worth more than the monitary cost to you. I hope you do it. Thanks,

Tim, just one or two cautions about having your coins imaged.....

It is my understanding that coins imaged via "Trueview" at PCGS are typically imaged OUTSIDE of their holders. As such, they would be exposed to the atmosphere, etc. after havng resided in their current holders for years. You, no doubt, already know how reactive copper can be. Additionally, I don't know that you could have them re-holdered with the older green labels. So, my guess is that you would want to make it abundantly clear that the coins are to remain in their current holders?image

Congrats to both parties on what sounds like a most enjoyable transaction between two true collectors.

    Mark,

They can and will take pictures through the plastic if you request it.

I've had it done on green label coins I didn't want removed. Pictures turned out just as good!

Thanks, Mark, it was great to meet Tim and get to see that set.

Tim, I hope you can work it out and get the TrueView Photos taken. I agree with the others, make it abundantly clear you want the photos taken in the existing holders. Not only to keep the old green holders, but keep those beauties from being exposed to anything, including fingers! image

Tim sold me one of his extras a while ago and if that 1912 65RB wasn't even good enough for Liston Two, I can scarcely imagine what Liston One must be like!

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

You can have Doug Plasencia of ANR can shoots these coins in the holders and the results will be amazing.
