Will this 1959 Nickel go CAM? (with NCS's help)

To DCAM or not to DCAM is the question. I picked up this yesterday along with 5 other proof sets. The 1959 set had 3 cameos. I spent all my graduation money, so I am now once again poor. If I had more I would have bought a 1955 set with a MONSTER CAMEO HALF!@!#!@!@!@ THe half had the nicest cameo I have ever seen in my life; it was a monster even with the cellophane over it. I think I might go trade in my car, ride a bike to the store then buy the half.

From the picture, some of the reverse lettering seems to lack frost... I'm not even sure if it would CAM, unless it's got more than I see

  • It is just the lighting; it always makes the bottom half of the coin seem weaker than it is.

Well I like it for at least a CAM, especially if the frost toward the bottom of the obverse is strong and just didn't photograph well. With all of that "noise" in the fields I don't know if it would go higher than 65 or 66, though.

If you want to hear what PCGS thinks about it, I'm getting a couple of submissions ready shortly and I can send it in for you, drop me a PM if you're interested.

if the picture is accurate, i seriously doubt that a coin would have the depth of frost this appears to display with what some seem to believe is weakness over a large area of the coin. that just isn't a strike characteristic, nor is weakness on frost at the lettering. as a general rule when the frost wears off it wears off first from the center of the coin out to the rim, usually on Jefferson's cheek/jaw and the second window from the Portico out. that's what i see as typical frost break on this series. the anomalies some see are almost certainly a characteristic of the lighting.

i would grade it(albeit from a picture) as PR68CAM with a legitimate claim to DCAM. if the mirror depth is good i would send the coin as is. if there is haze it may help to have NCS look at it because if the frost is as strong as it appears the DCAM designation will be dependant on mirror depth.

remember this is just an opinion based on a picture.

  • Any other opinions on this coin? I might put up some pictures of all the other cameos I got from the 5 proof sets. I really like the 1957 cam lincoln and 1960 small date cam lincoln I picked up.

If the image is accurate, or even close, I think it's a no-brainer cameo. I don't know Jeffersons all that well, but isn't 1959 one of the tougher ones?

  • I think so, there are 26 in DCAM+UCAM. I think this coin might go DCAM. I believe the reverse is a solid DCAM, and the obverse is a nice cameo with a shot DCAM. The reverse has the desired white devices, while the obverse's devices are not as white. The specks on the coin are mostly haze and dirt. I found no hairlines anywhere on the coins surface; the only flaw is the slight change in contrast on the jawline.
