but didn't really know why. It was probably the concept of money itself that got my attention but when
I learned that these traded at random and were dated then it just seemed natural to attempt to find
all the dates. My brothers both collected cents so I started a set of buffalos but before it was half done
the coins started disappearing from circulation so it was completed by mail order in the early 1960's.
When the date freezes were instituted in '64 it seemed to take all the fun out of collecting and it was
murder on the variety of coins. In 1970 all the quarters were dated from '65 to '70 and they were all
XF/ AU and almost uniformly ugly. It's small wonder world coins became so popular to collect.
It was the announcement from the mint in 1972 that they were going to start rotating out the coins
which had been in storage the longest that got me started on moderns. It was the high prices of most
US coins in the 1979 runup that got me started collecting tokens and medals. And it was the announc-
ment that the states coins were a go in 1996 that got me specializing in the moderns.

At about 12 years old a freind showed me his coins, and I was hooked! A short while later I had a paper route and started collecting from my change. My parents thought collecting coins was stupid, so I never purchased a single coin before I was married! Now I have a great supporting wife who likes to look at any new coin I get. She is pretty cool about it. I get to spend what I want, when I want, and she is okay with it!
