If you cracked a Saint out of PCGS...

years ago, and it was a 63, and you have long since lost the tag, what are the chances of getting it re-slabbed by PCGS at the same grade?

Edit: and by "you" of course I mean "I". I was such a dummy...

My guess would be slim to none without the original invoice or insert. You'd probably have to resubmit.
  • I'm sure you're right. I was just wondering if I do resubmit from scratch, what are the odds it will still grade 63 (assuming I haven't been using it as a pocket piece in the meantime)? Or with gradeflation is it likely it would grade higher?

I would resubmit if you want it in a slab. You probably have somewhat decent odds of getting it in a 63 holder. Do you have a pic?

15% chance it AUs and whatever is left over goes to getting the same grade. image

All kidding aside, PCGS does pretty well on Gaudens in this grade range. The majority of coins would come back the same grade, it is just the few Tweeners that sparc conversation when it keeps getting different grades.

The original tag wouldn't have helped you. There is no way of proving that your coin went with that tag. Once you crack it out, all bets are off.

I'd say you have a 75% chance of a 63 or better. I say 75% because of the possibility of mishandling...

I think they were pretty tight ten years ago.
About four to six years back they seemed a little looser.
    Now they seem very tight.

I think you have a real good chance at the original grade. No downgrade unless it has picked up some hairlines since removed.

10% chance at an upgrade (unless it was a rare date, then it will upgrade).

Having or not having the original "tag" doesn't mean a thing. They wouldn't care if you sent the coin in for grading with the old tag/cert.

If it graded ms/63 years ago, it probably has a decent chance of grading there again as long as you haven't messed with it in the meantime.

  • Sorry, took awhile to find the pics. This was a flatbed scan thru plastic, so I hope it's good enough to tell.

From your scan, I'd say 64, if there's strong luster. I know scans suck, 'cause they don't show luster.
  • Nice crisp photo there Boom.

Just curious: Is Lady Liberty wider on yours? It looks like a completely different style. Flatter, but hair is fuller and more detailed, face has more features...

Boom---Did you buy that "Saint" from someone in China through eBay?

No, it's a copy and clearly marked as such on the Reverse. It has some silver in it and is plated. You can see where it has begun to wear off.

I carry it around as a ball marker for Golf outings. Kind of hard to miss. Much easier than trying to spot a dime. LOL. image
