Curious where these will end up

1955 TOPPS HANK AARON GAI 6.5 #47

and

1955 TOPPS HANK AARON PSA 6 #47

These 2 cards end 1 minute apart tonight and are offered by the same seller. Right now, the PSA 6 Aaron is at 3X the price.

Any guesses?

The GAI looks like a much stronger card because of the corners. I'd guesss that it goes for 30-40% more than the PSA.

Looks to me like an example of buying the holder, not buying the card. I thought the GAI looked nicer.

When I see a card that appears to be "too nice for the grade" like this one, in a GAI holder - it doesn't give me a good feeling.

I know that feeling well. My gut instinct tells me that if a major dealer has a card in a GAI holder there's usually a very good reason for it.

Sometimes these dealers buy the cards already graded and sell them that way. I dont think there are any really horrible stories about GAI grading trimmed cards...I mean, rumors like that float around about every grader...some more than others for good reason. But, I don't think I would have a hard time pulling the trigger on a nice vintage card in a GAI holder. In fact, I have. This is an excellent example of buy the card, not the grade. I would have had no problem taking the risk on the GAI if I thought it was stronger. I also dont think any "funny stuff" is going on just because a seller has a GAI graded card for sale.
And with that, I have seen many other board members have GAI graded cards and then crack them to submit to PSA...so I know Im not the only one buying GAI graded cards when it seems appropriate.
  • Since we are on a slight GAI conversation here, can someone explain to me the purpose of the 'First Graded' designation on some GAI holders? Did the people that submitted the 'first graded' get a discount on it? Reason why I am asking is I have bought a handful of GAI 'first graded' cards, and every time I have the card looked nice and got cracked and crossed to PSA for great results...
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Forget blocking him; find out where he lives and go punch him in the nuts. --WalterSobchak 9/12/12

    I've wondered the same thing.

I have bought several GAI's. I have a 48 Leaf Sammy Baugh RC GAI 5, a 48 Bowman Bill Dudley RC GAI 6.5, a 50 Bowman Sid Luckman GAI 7, a 50 Bowman Bob Waterfield GAI 7, a 1951 Bowman Steve Van Buren GAI 6 and a 1969 topps Larry Csonka RC GAI 7. Both the Baugh and the Dudley are first graded cards, which I believe means that they are the first of that specific card graded by GAI. I have been VERY pleased with all of these purchases. I love buying GAI cards because they sell for a little less than the big boys, but IMO are tough graders. Actually, I have a 100% satisfaction rate buying GAI and SGC. I have had several times though that I bought a card that I believe was overgraded by PSA. I just bought the GAI 7 Csonka off of Ebay last week because of the price ($22.00) and I think it is nicer that the SGC 86 (7.5) that I already had.

I like the GAI 6.5 and would not be surprised if it may cross to a PSA 7.

And if it does, then it's a good deal IMO since the card will be worth around 350$.

Who bought the card? Someone here?

  • I have a couple of GAI cards I submitted that have first graded on them. They do not charge any extra for this they are merely marking the card that it is the first of that card they have graded in that condition. Does it mean any extra, I really doubt it. There may be some collectors out there who will put a premium on these cards.
