Does the INCREDIBLE profusion of auction company listings keep YOU from even bothering to search?

topstuftopstuf Posts: 14,803 ✭✭✭✭✭
It has me. Look at almost any fairly scarce category and the list of non-eBay "auctions" is staggering. I've quit bothering as it seems that if I see something interesting, I find I would have to register ..SEPARATELY...and pay a hefty BUYER FEE to get the stupid thing.

I know this has been hashed before, but now it seems that the entire COIN section is taken over by auctions that have no relationship to eBay auctions.

Very bothersome when trying to search for coins on eBay. As a seller, I dislike them because they clog the listings and make it more difficult for customers to find our offerings.

My answer was not one that was supplied. The coins that I seek are rarely offered on ebay. When I was working on the 7070, I spent far more time on ebay looking for type coins, but alas, bought very few on ebay.
  • Great poll. This is incredibly annoying. The worst part about all these listings is that you can't get a feel for where the coin should price--some shops (I can't remember which) put in estimated prices, others list $1-1MM. Total waste of time.

Perhaps we ...peons.... could modify our listings to include ...buyer fees. And specify when and where PayPal could be used and only over a certain amount.

It would be interesting to see what eBay's response would be. I'm sure they love the added sales and fees and I imagine they discount the fees for such volume users. But I just wonder what their "official" reason would be to preclude us 'nobodys" from charging the same fees.

I hate 'em. I wish we could specifically exclude them in a search. I feel badly for sellers who have the misfortune of listing their item to end right around the same time as these big batches of "auctions" with 15-20% buyers fees, as they will probably not be seen by people who scroll past these clusters of offerings.

Auction companies need to provide a service where a detailed want list can be entered, and email sent whenever it hits. I'm certainly not going to stop by XYZ company every week or so and run a bunch of searches, but if I get an email that a coin I want is available, I'll hop on over and snatch it.

Good search sites: eBay, Teletrade, Heritage, David Lawrence

Bad search sites: everyone else (as far as I can tell)

Guess who gets most of my business?

EDIT: I didn't want to delete my post, but it totally does not answer the poll question. For the poll, auction company listings do not discourage me.

I NEVER bother looking at Flea bay:

    1) No need to look a second time at auction house listings from the catalogs/auction websites. 2) Most coins are low end on Ebay (no offense, but not my interest). and 3) "Buy-it now's" are unrealistic, and then you have all the other problems with fakes, unslabbed, etc. 4) Clueless on cherry-picking and from what I gather, about as common as someone striking it big at the casino vs. the losers.

Where would be the fun in that!

  • I hate the hefty fees the big companies charge. I hate the double standard where eBay allows them to add "extra premiums" but if we tried it, they'd call it "fee avoidance". I hate the Live Auction model, but I also hate auctions where all you can do is place an absentee bid before the floor opens and cross your fingers. I hate paying sales tax on Heritage's stuff.

Wow that felt good. Just call me Oscar The Grouch. I hate negative people, don't you?

Oh, and I also wish there was some way you could filter them out.
  • I have avoided a fair number of auction house listings by selecting in my search parameters to only show sellers that accept PayPal, that option is often missing in the commercial auction listings and those auctions do not come up in the results index.

While I might miss a regular auction this way, I would not feel safe paying with a money order anyway.

I really don't like it but I put up with it. These can be weeded out pretty easily, especially since they are usually bulk uploaded and all at the same time. I just quickly scroll to the end of the listings and then start looking at e-bay stuff again.

The worst part about it is the 20% buyers fee through e-bay. If you just go to the auction web page it is reduced to 15%.
  • They're annoying to me as well. If you don't want to deal with the live auctions on eBay, two filters remove most of them. As one previous poster mentioned you can "include only PayPal". Also, under advanced search, you can exclude UserIDs for instance "heritagegalleriesandauctioneers". Do that to all your searches and most will go away. You can exclude up to 10 sellers by their UserID.

Sorry if I missed your point but if you mean that there are too many eBay live listings cluttering up the categories, it's REALLY easy to EXCLUDE certain sellers from your searches (like heritage e.g.).
