Door #1 or Door #2

I want to get a full-auto MAC11 (machine gun) at @$4000. My wife told me I can only get it if I sell $4000 worth of my coin collection. So that would put a pretty good dent into the collection but I could recover (I could sell 3 or 4 key coins).

I'm looking for opinions of what you'd do. Keep in mind I am about as passionate about guns as I am coins. As far as investment potential, the MAC11 will probably appreciate as well or better than the coins.

Isn't there something else you could get that is full auto? Why a MAC11?

You might be better served by an HK. That MAC11 will break with regularity. You will chew up lots more $ (and coins?) buying spare or replacement parts.

BTW: This MAC has been specially and highly modifed to be more reliable (the gunsmith made only 11 of these). The gun runs like a swiss watch, it is "somewhat" accurate and controllable in full auto due to its redesign and it is almost new with only 2 or 3 mags run through it. It is in my price range. H&K is WAY beyond my price range. image

Serbian AK with high impact resin folding stock. Flawless machined construction not stamped , throw it in the lake and it still
works. Best of all the cost is $4000.00 minus $3550.00. By the way also comes with bayonet no extra charge!

Preface: I know nothing about the gun.

With that said, I say go for the gun.

    1. It will appreciate in value.
    2. It will protect the coins should the need arise.
    3. You can have a lot more fun with it than the coins. You can take it out, shoot it, etc. You can't really throw coins across the room for fun.
    4. You can recover the coin loss. It sounds like the gun you want is pretty rare and doesn't come around very often.

    Just my 2 cents. image

This isn't very OT. He has to choose between the coins and the gun. He is trying to discuss the pros and cons of each.

Love the poll - was wondering what the makeup of these boards were in that regard.

I did vote #1, but not for the MAC11....if you're gonna do it, do it right. image

The MAC would be fun, though. Does Cobray manufacture in the US?

I'd keep the coins a machine gun would cost too much to shoot often and you'd have to get background checks, pay for a license, and have a place to secure it as a collector.......too much hassle if you ask me just buy semi-autos.

Might as well buy a Hummer while you're at it.

Even more reason to stay away from this one. Only 11 made means when it breaks, you have a $4000 doorstop.

The MG is registered in 9mm and .45, both super cheap. I've also gone through the class 3 process and it is quite painless. I am in a very MG friendly state.

I guess I am wondernig why you want the machine gun?

Not that there's anything wrong with it, probably a hell of a lot of fun to shoot, but is it really what you want, or does lack of
current ownership make the heart grow fonder?

If I were in the market for a full auto weapon (and didn't live in the PRC) I'd be looking at a Thompson .45, BAR or an M4 Carbine. All tried and tested by our nations best for years and all have proven to be extremely reliable. The spare parts market for these weapons is very large as well. You'll never have a problem finding parts and/or accessories.

HK's are nice but uber $. Sig is making a new assault rifle that I think is incredible but you'll pay your first born to get one I'd imagine.

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

  • I would go for the gun, but if I was going to spend 4-5k on a gun I myself wouldn't go with a full auto. In fact my choice would be bolt action..

At .50 BMG it would probably cost about the same to shoot one round as it would cost for a whole mag in that machinegun. Also a lot more accurate and for me accuracy is what it's all about.

I think there is less than 600 of them in the good ole USA.

Thats the Serbian version, much more accurate and all parts are machined not stamped!

Full autos are cool but I'd want something more like an H&K.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

  • jayboxxjayboxx Posts: 1,613 ✭✭
How much are H&K's going for these days? I remember when you could buy them for around $600-700. I would definitely look at one of those, or an AR

FA H&K MP5/SP89 (You'll never find a legal HK94 in FA) Runs over $15,000 as does a legal FA (for civilian ownership) AR15 (or the rare civilian legal FA M16).

The MAC10 and 11 are some of the only "affordable" Full Autos still available. I'd love a Tommy - I have a really nice early West Hurley Semi-auto - but they start at $15k for a "good " condition one (think VF) and upwards of $50k for AU. If you could find one in BU, it'd be like $100k.
