with drugs, maybe.
edit to add:
but they'd have to be good drugs
For those who make this hobby a business, there is plenty of greed to go around...
Why not?

Sure. It's called "enlightened self-interest".
If you're too greedy, word gets around and your business suffers.

Subconsciously coin people have an unquenchable need to elevate their self worth (or self esteem, if you would) by getting over on others. Some refer to this as getting a rip.
So the outward appearance is that greed is driving this, but the reality is that it is more likely low self esteem manifesting itself as the need to get over on others to make one feel good about him or herself.
BTW -- I did terrible in psychology so this is just conjecture on my part

I am deeply indebted to many of you for your humor. I might have to pay CU a couple hundred bucks a year plus thousands getting coins graded, but every laugh I get for free on the boards ensures me that it is worth it.
Cotton what ? I've heard of cotton balls , but that Raggedy Ann thing was a new one to me

Correct answer is not as long as the wrong answer
<< <i>I think that greed is a derivative byproduct (e.g. the outward appearance) but not necessarily the root of what drives the type of behavior you are referring to.

Now we know the whole idea behind "registry" sets came from.

I agree except I just want ALL the coins. ALL COINS EVERYWHERE.
I would fill the trunk of my car with coins, coins, coins.
Not so much amongst true collectors who just enjoy the hobby, but a massive amount of greed amongst dealers, wannabe dealers, collectors playing the crackout game, small timers crusing Ebay for coins they can rip, etc.
One of the biggest fuels for all this is the grading services and their 'opinion of the day' which will generally change in time, and the weight these slabs carry in the marketplace and the bigger fool theory, although the greed was still there even before the plastic factories.

Not at my house. I have a wok and aim to use it on a regular basis.
Its just more apparent because the subjective valuations and being a cash business attracts some of the less scrupulous types.

It's not just coin people. Lots of people want to "get a rip" on different things. My wife ^H^H^H^H^H^H^H I know someone who is obsessed with getting the best deal possible, on everything, all the time. Nothing wrong with that, except she takes it to embarrassing and tedious extremes, to the point of pissing off friends and making a scene in public. I have often wondered if self-esteem isn't somehow a factor, because she is a very insecure person. Maybe accumulating Value is a way to prove oneself, or to feel more secure. Maybe collecting things in general is also. Maybe it's the same thing that drives animal collectors and extreme over-eaters.
