What do you do.......when you come to a point in your

collecting...that the coins you need are getting way too expensive...You all have been there....At first the coins are fairly inexpensive, and you can but one, heck sometimes several in a month. But as time goes on and you acquire more and more to finish your set or collection, the nicer coins are getting more and more expensive. What do you do?

I sold them all and started collecting Darkside stuff, mostly Canadian!

    Nice stuff, and affordable.

I just keep saving and selling the little stuff I don't want anymore. Someday something will turn up and I'll be ready

I'm getting close to that point now. I'm beginning to sell off my SAE's, silver proofs and GAE's to fund the Morgans I still need. Soon I'll sell the darkside stuff and then, who knows?

Always looking for attractive rim toned Morgan and Peace dollars in PCGS or (older) ANA/ANACS holders!

That's my plan- and when life presents those moments of "bonus" money, I usually fund it directly to a nicer date....

Post the unders on the BST board for couple of days, them off to eBay if nobody here want it, and hope some money ends up in the PayPal account for the next coin.
Or just work like a dog till I have enouph for the next one.

You can start selling off your "extras" and also try and pick up coins that you can "flip" for a quick profit. Sometimes dealers will give you a discount if you buy multiple items from them. You can buy the coin you want along with something else (or a few others) in his/her inventory that looks like it might be a bit underpriced and get both (or more) coins for a discount. Then sell the extras on E-bay or Overstock (try putting the coins that don't sell for what you want to get on E-Bay onto Overstock and visa versa). Also, you can try and predict what the "hot" items from the mint will be for the year and buy a couple of each and sell them in between thanksgiving and Christmas on E-bay. Apply all extra moneys made these ways to your long term collection. You probably won't be able to pay for your collection this way, but you may find that you can now afford the higher prices that your advanced collecting practices need.
  • I always start by going for the most expensive ones first. People have been telling me that all my collecting life, but it took me a lifetime to hear it. So yeah I've got lots of holes in my type set, but at least the 1796 quarter is out of the way. Been thinking about getting back into Morgans. If so, I'll get the 93-S and the 94 first. Then it will be all the other common ones that are getting way too expensive!
  • I buy a coin, look at it, and then sell it. That's all I do now.

I'm at the same point as well. I'm thinking of selling off one of my lesser completed collections (Buff Nickels at the moment) to fund [in part] the last IHC I need to finish off the collection. I'm about there in Lincolns as well..the last three dates... and I'll probably do the same thing.

I branch out into a new area, but I usually keep looking at those last few pieces. Over time as my income has risen it has gotten to the point where I can now afford some of those coins I couldn't before and I am starting to look at them more seriously
