Should the MCMVII Saint-Gaudens $20 be reissued with the date MMVII?

September 2007 will mark the 100th anniversary of the first production of the Saint-Gaudens high relief double eagle. Do you think the US Mint should reissue the coin in satin surface high relief, made from the original VHR models? No alterations, including omission of the religious motto as Theodore Roosevelt and S-G agreed, except the date change.

The resulting gold coin would likely be much sharper and more detailed than the MCMVII version due to improvements in die making and production presses.

If this were done, should it's price include a donation to the SGNHS in Cornish, NH?

That would be a great idea, and I would certainly buy one. However, it'll never happen.

Yes, but only if the design wouldn't be a caricature of the original, as the Buffalo Nickel dollar was. In other words, no.

I would absolutely buy one - but only if the date is the only thing they changed. It will not happen though.

    Something to consider, for sure.

    Great Idea image
  • An excellent idea from start to finish. If the Mint actually did this would the resultant coin be a St. Gaudens Double Eagle or merely a GAE? It seems that it would have to be considered a Double Eagle if all of the listed criteria were met.

The donation is an excellent idea as well, and would be happily paid by many collectors. Let's do some emailing and see if we can get a Senator/Congressperson to back it.

If they high teched the design I think it would destroy the aesthetics. Use dies similar to the originals!!

And no fewer than 7 blows from the press.

Because it would require new legislation and as slow as Congress normally moves on numismatic legislation it most likely would not have a chance of passing before Congress adjurns in Sept to go home and campaign for the elections. They may meet again briefly after the elections but don't count on them getting much done. Then they adjurn until after the start of the year. At that point the session ends and the bill dies. After the new Congress Session begins next year the bill can be reintroduced and start over again from scratch. But this bill isn't widely popular, it isn't "sexy" so it will be difficult to get it to move forward. If you are lucky you might get it passed sometime around this time next year. (The San Francisco Mint bill has been in motion for at least three years now and it probably has more wide spread support than a reissue of a double eagle.)

You may also have a problem in that they may consider it to be a "commemortive" program and it may then have to compete with the other 2007 commem programs that have already been in the works for two or three years.

Interesting idea, so long as the original models are used. That would be neat.
