Counterfeit Cal Gold coin?

caitlincaitlin Posts: 858 ✭✭✭
HI everyone
I looked at an old collection today and found two counterfeit cal gold coins. One was an octagonal the other round.
At least I think they were conterfeit, the reverse had 1/4 over CAL GOLD surounded by a wreath and the other 1/4 with the wreath.
The Red book states it must have CENTS, DOL, DOLL,OR DOLLAR on the reverse to be genuine.
I talked to Darin BigD and he thought they were, he also said 1 out of every 10 gold coins are thought to be counterfeit.

Any thoughts?

tons of fake fractional gold out there, i wouldnt dream of buying any raw without doing hours upon hours of research. ive seen these with a bear on them, if it has a bear it is fake.

Probably fake based on your description. Pics would help.

These two coins didn't have a bear on them. I don't have pics because I don't own the coins. The other thing I remember was the 1/4 was dead center on the reverse on both.

Caitlin, listen to the "Red Book". If there is no denomination along with the fraction, it's not the real thing.image

Thanks for the reply and yes the Red Book (great reference book) did save me from buying the counterfeit Cal Gold coin. I've never seen one before so I had nothing to go on. Now if the guy had Buffalo Nickels I most likley wouldn't of had a problem.image

Also needed to add a Big thanks for his advice he advised me not to buy them as well.

There are likely more counterfeit Cal golds out there than legitimate pieces, though I have no hard evidence to back this up, and what you are describing sounds no good.
