What was the source of the gold for US coins pre 1834?

I would guess melted foreign gold coins would be some. Was there also domestic mining? The Redbook tells of the Charlotte and Dahlonega mines used after 1834 due to the gold strikes there, but I don't think I've read anything about major mining prior to those areas.
Where were the gold mines if we had any?
