The high and low of playing the crack out game

I recently acquired two sweet coins, a 1942-S Walker NGC 64 and a 1934-S Peace NGC MS-62. Both worthy of an upgrade, so I decided to play the crackout game.

Sent both in for walkthrough grading hoping that the limited time would see the plus.

The walker was the joy as it now sits in an NGC MS-65 holder. Nice gain over the 64 value, however, the 34-S Peace came back in a MS-61 holder. Almost enough to make me cry.

Both coins were submitted raw.

Since I bought both coins "right", there is still room to try the crossover to PCGS.

Does anyone feel that the walkthrough is better for coins that sit on the bump? Or is the regular crossover about the same odds?

For a coin of that type and value, I don't think it makes any difference, odds-wise. Either way, I must ask, why would you even consider spending $100 on a crossover of a coin that is valued (only) in the $500 range?
  • The coin was bought at low 64 bid, making the difference between 64 and 65 worth the $125 grading fees.

As a collector who does very little submitting, I always pay the lowest price I can to have my coins graded. Time is not of the essence, as it might be for some dealers, so I would have submitted those coins regular ($30) or express ($50), if I only had two coins to send. In my view, you just gave PCGS an extra $150. As a CLCT shareholder, I would like to personally thank you.

You're assuming they got the grades right on this regrade. Chances are they did not. On multiple tries that 34-s may go back to a 62 or even a 63. The other coin might downgrade on successive tries, but that's not going to happen since you got the desired grade.

Each look by PCGS or NGC is just one data point. It says nothing conclusively about a coin's grade. It's an estimate at a point in a time, no more, no less. Yet, by many who buy and trade labels
(I'm as guilty as anyone), the one point is often considered to be
    the final say.

The fact that you already got an up-grade doesn't mean it's financially prudent to spend roughly 25% of the coin's current value on an additional grading/cross-over fee.image

Many collectors and dealers like walkthrough submissions since the results can be known in a short amount of time after the coin was submitted. Walkthough submissions, however cost much more per coin than "office" submissions so your monetary losses will be greater with regards to the grading fees.

Walkthrough submissions aren't always graded looser than a standard submission. Walkthrough grading is often much stricter than any other service tier.

I'm always amazed by the willingness of collectors to give pcgs large sums of money with little benefit in return.....

I'd just trade the Walker for a PCGS coin and pay the difference. It's sort of a guaranteed cross that way, instead of money down the drain. Unless you think the 34S is really AU, I'd just dip it in MS70 and send it economy to PCGs with other coins. TBut, there's not that big a difference between MS61 and 62 so the alterenative is just sell it on ebay.
