Picked up this 1809 CBH on ebay, was listed as an O-105,with IIII edge.( Couldn't see the graffiti in the auction
pic )Overton does not mention this edge with this variety.Definately is O-105,but I'm not sure if it is the IIIII
edge or not.Is it possible to have this edge on this coin? This is the only place around the edge it shows up.
The letters read "IIIII fifty cents half a dollar "

I agree with Conder on this one; post mint damage.
According to Overton, O-105 should be a plain edge. It would be possible for a O-105 to have either a III edge or an XXX edge, imo. The edge devices were applied to the planchets prior to striking, so it would be possible that a leftover planchet from O-102 for example was used in the O-105 marriage. Possible, but I do not know of any specific examples. Maybe slumlord or someone else knows of specific examples.
The III device should be between OR and HALF and DOLLAR and FIFTY. On your coin it is just between DOLLAR and FIFTY. However, the biggest clue is that the III device does not look like the marks on your coin. Furthermore, the dented edge in the area of the marks on your coin support the conclusion of damage.

I can't seem to find a pic of the edge on a real coin, just the representations in Overton .
Does anyone have a pic or know where I can find one?
