    That coin had to have been submitted on a bet. I can't imagine even the most clueless thinking it was valuable.

    To get the grading discount they had to submit 10 coins but only wanted to slab 9 so they threw in this coin to make it ten.

    Apparently at least a couple of you guys would be very surprised at the large number of coins I saw (while a grader at NGC) which were not worth the price of the grading fee.
    There are countless owners of coins who have no idea about grade and value. If their submissions aren't pre-screened by a knowledgeable friend or dealer, they can and do waste plenty of $ on grading fees. If you need additional evidence of how little others know about coins, just spend a few minutes on Ebay's site. You can see bidders, galore, working hard to spend their $ on junk that is worth only a fraction of their bid amounts.
  • I sold a 1904 Indian in a slab but it was MS65 image
