$50 Gold Eagles no longer available at the Mint

Has anyone visited the US Min'ts web page today? The 1oz gold eagles seem to be no longer available... Have they really sold 12,000 of them already? Perhaps to gold speculators? Or is this the ramp up for Buffalos?

  • Wow! I can't believe people were actually willing to pay $885 for those.

There was only a small number of these coin available from the allotment of 12,000 available after they stopped the sale, something like 800 or so.....

Just wait till the Buffalo's come out.....

I bought when they were priced lower, but gold was going for $600-ish so there was still a significant premium on them. I was hoping that might keep mintages lower, but I guess some 11,999 other people were all thinking the same thing.

I'm with you, if the coin was available later in the year, signaling low interest, I'd have bought, even at the high price. The fact is, this is the highest mintage in years for the 1 oz Eagle. It's usually 10,000.

this could mean they didn't have many left anyway, a thousand or two, and repricing was a bunch of crap that wasted time and money for a very small return for the U.S. Govt.

Why someone would buy this when it's priced almost $250 above spot is beyond me.

Too much premium on the $50, the proof half was all I could muster before the price jump. I'm camping out for a buffalo now so just waiting for one to roam on over this way. Someone bought those remaining 50's @ more than $200 over spot, maybe the '06 may have a little numismatic value added...hummmmmmmmmmm that would be good. So maybe gold will go up so much that they can recover the two Ben's, that would be good too.

  • I fogured that someone here had access to information that I didn't. I would never have guessed that all by 800 of them sold before the repricing...

    Thanks for the comments!
