Stay away, a big fat ZERO feedback - granted, he's been on ebay a whole 24 hours. Could be legit, but I wouldn't touch it with a 20 ft pole.

Damn nice card even though it looks as if were washed and then put into the dryer.

I'd love to bid on it (and may), but there are warning flags all over the place. I wouldn't bid any amount of money you aren't willing to light on fire.
    Currently Buying:
2004 Tommie Harris SPX Printing Plate (White Whale will pay top $$$)
1994 SP Football Die Cuts PSA 10s

Is Bessemer City, North Carolina anywhere close to Dallas, North Carolina?
If so, maybe Ron Moss could go check it out in person and let us know what it looks like under close inspection.
I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.

Yes as a matter of fact the fellow that owns the card was standing with me when I posted this thread. I wanted to show what he would run into with a card like that and no feedback. He and his wife, if I am not mistaken, found the card in an old house on her grandmother's property. No fast dealings intended in this post.

Edited to add: I have never seen the card. I created a link to let the people that know cards rate it for him. That's all I know about it and will get more Info when we come back to work Monday night and will post anything different than what I have stated. Thanks for any opinions.

  • Back to this Ty Cobb card. The man that owns the card is standing with me now as we work together. The story on the card:

The card was found about 20 years ago in an old house by the man's wife on family owned land. He has never sold anything on eBay before. He said the card looks better in person than the picture shows The card is 5 3/4 x 8 inches.

So now that you have seen it... Is it real or a reprint?

  • I have never seen the card. I did tell the man that owns it that a card of that magnitude should be graded and that he should offer a return privilege on the eBay post. When the owner told me he listed it on eBay I just posted a link on the Card Forum to get the opinion of the card experts here.

  • I think he definitely should get it graded. I believe there are full size reprints out there (though I'm not sure if they're marked reprints, and if not, how to tell them apart.)

It's an awesome card if it's real!
  • If the man is telling the truth, the card has to be real. Reprints don't show up in old people's houses in the early 1980's......

There are, indeed, full-size reprints (done by Mike Wheat). They are marked reprints, however.

I don't recall ever hearing of a full-size reprint other than the ones done by Wheat...

I believe you, but I don't necessarily believe the seller - I don't care who he is. Firstly, his story could be madeup, secondly even if not madeup, "twenty" years ago could have easily been say twelve years ago rounded off to twenty. Anyone can do whatever they want here but I'm not bidding. Even if the card is genuine, he's got a reserve on it anyway which is most likely too high.

  • The seller should offer a 60 day return policy, thus giving the opportunity to the buyer to get it graded. If there is a problem w/ the authenticity the seller sould return the money for the card.
