Help on an Ohio trade token - Griesheimer Bros.

tmot99tmot99 Posts: 5,238 ✭✭✭
Does anyone have one of these tokens? The obverse says "Griesheimer Bros." and the reverse says "Good for 5 Cents in Trade". It is a brass token. I am really looking for good clear pictures of both sides. Also verification that it is an Ohio token. I was originally told California, but in the simple searches I've done, it appears that it is Ohio.

Thanks for your help.

    ttt

    anyone?
  • When you say Ohio token, what do you mean? Do you mean the make of the token? Or do you mean, yes, this token was used in Ohio etc etc

Just curious as alot of scrip I collect is provided by Orco. (Ohio Register Company)

Well, to be honest, I don't really know. I assume that it was used in Ohio. The token book that I've looked through on other tokens had them listed by state. When I did a search for the Griesheimer Bros. on the internet, it pulled a couple of sites mentioning Chillicothe, OH. However, the sites didn't have the information I was looking for or were not valid sites.

I should add that the reason I am asking for this is that I have just purchased one of these elongated at the 1893 World's Fair. I have a bunch of new elongates that will be listed over the weekend.
  • Have you tried the US Genweb sites? Gen web has a by state breakdown and yes, they do have Ohio. If you have the county name, you could go to that specific county message board and start asking. Aloot of folks who lived in the area or have relatives there will be very helpful as primary data sources beat a catalog any day of the week. My owen experience has shown that knowing the people and some of the induatries in the area are very helpful in the area of exonumia especially.

If you think that will help, I can dig up the link or feel free to Google away. The only caution I ould give is that if a token is unlisted, it is NOT at all indicative of rarity. Token catalogs are notorious for ommisions and token dealers tend to feed on folks who do not have this little nugget of info in mind.
  • tmot99,

If the token is really from the Chillicothe, OH. area, then the county would be Ross County. My brother lives in Ross Co. Are you planning on auctioning this token, or is it an elongated for your collection? I may have an interest.

    << <i>Chillicothe, OH >>

The stinkiest town in the midwest. They got a paper factory there you can smell for miles. Don't speed on the highway there, the state troopers in that area are crazy strict.

I have two of these tokens that are elongated. I just took pictures of about 10 elongateds that I got and will do the Photoshop later today or tomorrow. I like to have photos of the coin non-elongated. When I bring my collection for others to see, I include pictures of the non-elongated version so they know what details to look for.

I may have found another clue, but it leads in a different direction. This is from Chandlers Business Directory of Indiana 1868

Condor, thanks for the added info. So right now I have 3 opinions. California, Ohio, and Indiana. Anyone with a token book that could look to see if it's listed? I understand that it might not be listed, and that's fine. But if it is in an obvious place, may as well look there.

Nevermind on the token book. I just looked through California, Indiana, and Ohio. Nothing to be found. The search continues....

I don't see it in the MI or IA books.
