Overall, do you prefer the obverse or the reverse?

With some exceptions (like seated coinage and 2c pieces) the obverese consists mostly of a portrait.

The obverse seems to be more important and can carry a coin into a higher grade.

But usually the best looking design on the coin is on the reverse.

For most coins I agree the obverse is nicer. Flying Eagle Cents have the neat eagle on the obverse, the reverse is OK but not as good as the obverse. The same can be said for many designs. The eagle on the reverse of a Walking Liberty half is awesome, but that obverse Walking Liberty design is even nicer, IMO.

One exception are all the state quarters where the interesting state design is on the reverse and the boring Washington portrait is on the obverse. Of course this exception is not an exception if we consider Washington to be the reverse, but I don't because he always used to be the obverse ever since 1932.

A nice original Obverse is more important than the Reverse, and that goes for coins too.image

  • You guys keep talking about this "obverse" stuff, and I still haven't an idea what it means.

The obverse is the front. The reverse is the back. That works for coins and other things too.

I like the backside better over the bust............and the reverse of coins too.

You just can't top a real nice tail-end. And as far as coins go, I actually prefer a nice reverse on them as well.imageimage

Personally, I think the reverse (or backside) defines the uh....uh....coin! image

Depending on what you collect , it can be hard to tell the difference between obv. and rev. image

I prefer the reverse, except on coins where I prefer the obverse. image

I agree, reverses are usually much nicer.

There are several classic commems where it is questionable which side is the obverse and which side is the reverse. Also, the $1 and $3 gold coins have the date and mintmark on the reverse which makes that reverse the more important side.

I like the obverse, after all the obverse carries most of the grade.
