I'd have thought NGC would not have slabbed this coin...

I didn't bid on this because of the scratches on the reverse and the rub on the "5" in the date. I didn' think NGC slabbed problem coins...

  • Looks very minor to me and the defects are probably less noticable in hand but....NGC does tend to bag a lot of coins for slight problems so this one could have gone either way in my book.

I had a nice $10 Eagle returned from PCGS with smaller scratches than that. But I agree, it could have gone either way and that is a coin I don't mind in a slab for its condition.

I've seen quite a few large cents and half cents in slabs with similar scratches. Maybe grading services make an exception due to the fact that these types of coins tend to have so many problems.

It's like any other coin with minor damage...submit it often enough and it will grade. This is true at ALL the services not just NGC. I have pulled worse bust material out of both PCGS and (non-net graded) ANACS slabs.
Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.

So as a hypothetical [obviously I didn't buy this coin]:

I'm normally inclined to crack out copper coins. The only one I've not done this with is my 1909-S IHC and I probably will at some point in the future. Would it behoove one leave copper coins in holders that indicate no problems when the coin has obvious scratches or corrosion or whatever? It seems that Large Cents are particularly difficult to find in "no problems" condition.

    Thanks for the responses...Leo

I dont see why they wouldnt slab that coin. 58 seems a little liberal, though. Looks 53ish to me.

I agree with those that said this coin could go either way, depending on how the NGC graders feel at the time.

I've seen worst coins net graded within NGC holders. This large cent is reasonable.

  • I have a dime that has staple scratches on both sides.

Not only did NGC grade it they said they liked just fine when I sent it in for grade review.

Not trying to be sarcastic (it just comes naturallyimage) but if folks don't think the same kind of things don't get slabbed by PCGS....
I'd recommend you might need to get out more and see what is out in the market place.

A reasonable call. The 5 in the date seems to be weak from some grease on the die.

I still like that large cent, and think it deserves a holder- and yes, pcgs does the same damn thing.... image

I agree. The older or rarer the coin, the more tolerant the grading services are of problems.
