What is the distinction between an ANACS DMPL Morgan and a CAMEO DMPL Morgan?

When it comes to ANACS dollars, I see many Morgans, especially CC dollars, with the DMPL insert. Some also sport the CAMEO on the insert.
What is ANACS criteria for the CAMEO designation?

I believe its because of the extra frost plus the mirrors

Some coins are just plain "Interesting"
  • Maybe the degree of constrast between the field and the devices ?

I was told it had to do with the contrast. I need to take a better picture of this one.

    Nice looking dollars!
I just picked up this one yesterday afternoon. I've seen a few ANACS DMPL's for the date/MM but not one with the CAMEO designation too.

It'll be fun to see this one in hand. It strikes me it must be a coin ANACS deems to have a bit more contrast than a standard DMPL but I'm wondering if the graders have any special/specific considerations they look for first before assigning the grade/designation.

  • One of my favorte Morgan Dollars was in an ANACS MS 65 DMPL holder. I think it was before they started giving out the cameo modifier. The devices were very, very frosted. The fields had nice cartwheel luster. Personally I thought it should have been graded PL because the fields weren't perfect mirrors.

Anacs uses the UDM (Ultra Deep Mirror) designation for coins showing 12+ deep mirrors. The cameo designation depends on the frost contrast ratio to the fields. image

The extra terminology seems Redundant, but okay.
