  • Most Nikpn Coolpix cameras have a good macro setup. White balance and lighting seem to be the main keys to good pics.

You should be OK. Key is lighting and trying to focus on the coin and not the holder. Raw coins are much easier.

With the right lighting that camera should take pictures as good as any pro so you know the difficulty lies not so much in the camera.

It's tough to go wrong with a Nikon, even the older models... the only thing to watch out for, and this goes for ANY digi-cam you consider getting for the purpose of taking pictures, is that you want to get one with a black body. A silver body will often show up on the coins or slabs when you take the pictures...

An interesting observation that I've never thought about...and never seen mentioned elsewhere. Sounds right to me. I know I often struggle trying to keep the camera reflection off the slab.

Actually... electrical tape is still a little too shiney... i have a problem on my copy stand where the Proof Silver eagles (And it's only these coins) like to reflect a little piece of the polished aluminum... so I wrapped electrical tape around it... it's better, but it's still a little shiney, and isn't as good as the matte black on the camera body... I know of people that even have had to sharpie in any leters on the front of the body and the lens, b/c even those would get reflected

    Hi:

You are going to love that COOLPIX. I've got a 7900, and, although I am still figuring out how to
shoot coins, I am making some progress I think.

This "raw medal" shot was taken with natural light, on a window sill, on a bright, sunny morning.

Not perfect, but not too shabby, either. I still have not invested in a coin photo tent or holder for the
camera, but will probably do that later. This was a hand-held shot (hence the bit of fuzziness) using
the macro settings, and no flash (of course). The image was not manipulated at all other than
    cropping, upon completion.

You can do wonderful things with these COOLPIX cameras, once you get the hang of it.

    Have fun with it!

    Kind Regards,
