No because by law they have to minted along with the new presidential dollars.
    Many happy BST transactions

Given that fact they should be making less of them though. Right now, they only make rolls and bags for collectors as none are sent to the Federal Reserve banks for general circulation so, even though the coin has little appeal, it may become scarcer and scarcer as the Presidential Dollars get rolling. Just some thoughts.

Apparently the Goverment thinks the public is ready to reject two different dollar coins at the same time.

Until the FED's take the dollar bill out of circulation the dollar coin will never take off and be accepted.

  • Anyone know if the new presidential dollars are going to be "golden" yucky brown/gold color like the SACs?

*even though the coin has little appeal*

There is quite an appeal for the coin.....the Goodacre Sac is well over $1000 Dollars...the 2000 Millenium D and and other ms68 coins are out price range for many collectors. There is a heavy following among this series......

Every once in a while I'm driven to buy a few pennies worth of stamps from a Post Office Vending Machine so I can get Sackies in change out of my $20 bill. I then spend the Sackies when I'm bored.

A few days ago I paid for coffee with a Sackie and a State Quarter in my workplace Cafeteria. The Sackie was really bright & shiny. So shiny, it caught the eye of the guy on the other side of the register. Wouldn't you know it - he traded a dollar bill for the Sackie.

Guess the general public thinks the darned things are rare and valuable?image

    construct:

They're supposed to circulate. I think the idea behind this is to stimulate interest in the dollar coins to get them to circulate more. Without eliminating dollar bills, you can pretty much figure that one out. If there's any effect at all, it will be minimal at best. image
  • Geez Louise! I've got rolls and rolls of brand new 1999-D SBAs that I've been putting unto circulation at my local coffee shop and the law school vending machine. I don't buy brand new moderns. You can imagine how long it's going to take me to collect all those damn presidents out of "circulation"! image

  • While we are talking about dollar coins. Everyone has always said the Susie was ugly. I was watching something the other moning on the History Channel and it had a brief thing about Susan B. Anthony. Guess what, she was uglier than heck. She could scare buzzards off a gut wagon at 30 paces. The coin had to be ugly it looks just like she did.

I kinda like the idea image of a small dollar coin. The trouble is it's hard to get it circulated if the en masses still use the paper bill.Once the dollar bill ceases to exist then it's ...gun ho...image............

What makes you think they are going to be making less of them? They are going to have to make MORE than they do now.

Currently they are making about 5 to 6 million each year (Both mints combined) Next year in order to "push" the new President dollars we will probably see about 150 to 200 milion of each president. That means they will have to strike 300 to 400 million Sac dollars. (Law requires one Sac for every two president coins.)

That will give the govenment such a backlog of small dollars (900 to 1200 million coins) that from the second year on the number of each President dollar struck each year will just be for rolls and bags to sell to collectors, just like the Sac dollar is now. But since there are four presidents each year, and they will probably sell about the same number of each of those that they sell of Sacs now, that will mean a production of 20 to 24 million president dollars. And that will mean they will have to strike 10 to 12 million Sac dollars every year. And that means the government stockpile will grow by about 5 to 6 million unsold Sac dollars each year.

<< <i>And are these presidential dollars going into "circulation" just like the Sacs (or with even less fanfare)? >>

Yep, just like the Sac, at a rate of about 50 million a month for large cities with major mass transit systems. (five years after their introduction we still have a ten years supply of Sacs in the vaults. To those next year we will add another twenty year supply.)

<< <i>the other moning on the History Channel and it had a brief thing about Susan B. Anthony. Guess what, she was uglier than heck. >>

When she was young though, she was much more attractive. The original design was based on the young pretty Susan. But her decendants complained. They wanted the coin to portray her as she looked during the height of her political activity. So they change the design to what we finally got. And get this, the family is still not happy with it because they say it still pretties her up too much.
