Was Chris Ray's 4 out save legit - the O's won by 10 runs.

Last night Chris Ray came in the game 8th inning 2 on-2 out-1 run lead. He got the final out of the 8th then the O's proceeded to score 9 freaking runs and won 14-4. He got a 1-2-3 ninth and earned the save, is this the most useless stat in MLB or what? The Mariners might be the worst team in MLB, I don't hear any chants for the M's on this message board. How they are only 5 games under 500, I don't know. Where are all their fans?

Yes it is a save because the game was very much in doubt when he came in. How dare you try and strip away the honor of baseball's worst from my beloved Royals. Them's fighting words. image

  • Just check the box score. He entered with the Orioles holding a 5-4 lead and they had the tying run on 3rd base. The fact the O's lit up the Mariners pen for 9 in the 9th just made his job easier.

As to where are all the fans.... We left after the 2001 season when the ownership group stood pat and then got smoked in the playoffs by the Yankees after the 116 win season. Their decision at that time to just ride the wave of the new stadium and pocket the cash is really coming back to haunt them. I was a season ticket holder that year and have only been to 1 game since with no plans on returning as long as the present owners are in power.

Yes, the "save" is and always has been the most useless stat in baseball. Even the GWRBI meant more, and they had the sense to stop keeping track of those.
This is for you @thisistheshow - Jim Rice was actually a pretty good player.
