Coin shop recommendations

I am flying out to London tomorrow for a few days followed by a week or so in Italy.

If anyone knows of any good coin shops in London, or from Parma to Florence could you please post them here.

I know it's late notice but better late then never.

Baldwins is definitely on my list. I had send them an Email as to whether I could view the Royle Balwin South African coin collection ( in case it was on dispaly anywhere ) but unfortunately I have had no reply.

Spink is an absolute must, their new* building is very near the British museum and there are a few other coin shops in the area.

Another one I like is a little shop in my favourite area, Portobello-Notting Hill : michael coins

PS*: Not so new, they must have moved there around 2002 (?). The old one was in the West end, a bit more charming, next to which was and still is Steve Fenton's shop, but he rarely has stuff in the shop. I will assume that you know who Steve Fenton is. image

Another one worth checking out is Noble investments, a relatively new venture, by the chairman of Bonham's and a few other well known numismatists, such as Dimitri Loulakakis, by far the most well known dealer of modern Greek coins and a world authority on them, a fanatic Arsenal supporter and part of the team's board of directors. I have bought several coins from him at the end of the 90s,when he was still operating under Chelsea coins, including my two 1819 Ionian gem proofs. Dimitri's knowledge goes far beyond Greek numismatics but his 1979 Spink sale remains the most memorable sale of a Greek collection to date. I will definetely pay them a visit on my next trip to London.

PS: edited, my PC is giving me a lot of trouble today.

Michael Gouby (the proprietor) is an interesting chap and grades very conservatively.

I was disappointed with my trip to Spink. I came out of there having bought a 1951 proof set but found a far better quality one at Michaels and returned the Spink set. If there's an auction though, I'm sure would be very interesting.

When Dolphin Coins was in London, I thoroughly enjoyed my visit. It was not long after that time that they closed the shop and rebuilt in Leighton Buzzard, which is miles away from anywhere.

I got some interesting stuff at Philip Cohen in downtown London as well. My last trip there uncovered a lot of hard to find Whitman British coin albums that I'd never seen in the US.

I've found most coins to be rather pricey in Italy. And exporting older coins from Italy can be a bit touchy at best I hear (have never tried myself).
