WooHoo! My first Railroad Rim!

coindeucecoindeuce Posts: 13,474 ✭✭✭✭✭
Searching lots of bags of common date Morgans this past week, I found a partial collar(Railroad Rim) 1878-S in choice AU. Perfectly struck 50% out of collar. I've been through nearly 10,000 Morgans in the past two months, and this is the first I've actually found in 10 years of looking!! WooHoo!! This is the kind of mint error that makes a chill go through my spine. Neater than any Top Pop VAM that I own!!

You completely suck. That's a dream score. Now, please share with me where in the world you get bags of common Morgans to cherrypick through. image

Lots of footwork and road miles Jack. And it doesn't hurt to be the Vam specialist for a dealer who has been a strong buyer for 30 years. I'm in Dollar heaven. Pulled an AU-55 7/8 VAM 44 out of stock on the 3rd day of being on the job.

I believe you...suck again (unable to locate raging jealousy icon). But I agree, it's an incredible amount of work but I too find it very rewarding. I hope you got to keep the VAM-44.

Anyone have an idea what a 1964 Roosevelt dime railroad rim is worth?

I am on a mac and am not infected ... the alleged jpeg link downloads an .EXE file and attempts to run it.

I just fixed your links CoinDeuce.

Also, the RailRoad link in the other poster's message is clean. I just opened it and it shows a 1964 RR.

  • Wow! That is one of the nicest partial collar strikes I have seen in a long time. Congratulations! Very rare!!

It is incredible to me just by the fact that it is so evenly struck on the entire diameter. I have seen a few other examples owned by other collectors, but they each had the partial collar strike canted at a slight angle. This one is dead even at 50% all the way!!

I tried it on all my macs from X.2 - X.4.6 and it loads the JPG on all of them. They are graphics that were uploaded to CU even, not some external link. Do you have .jpg files set to open with a different program other than preview/photoshop etc??

I am software patent lawyer and definitely know what I am doing. Yes, the file contains a jpg that I can open. However, clicking the link downloads the file 641.jpg.exe. It may contain a virus or not. However, if I were on a windows machine, I would not be opening up executable image files. That is all ... proceed at your own risk.
  • How ironic that this Morgan must remain unslabbed to be appreciated. The three-sided slab that has been debated here would be nice.

    Cartwheel

    P.S. Nice find!

What about the new ANACS slabs ? Would that work? Don't know, just asking.
  • I am not a VAM collector or a Morgan collector, but that is one cool coin. It's amazing.

Maybe NGC would agree to use their new "special" holder which shows a good share of the edge.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.
  • thats a really cool find to find one missing that much.I had a seated dollar with railroad rim, but not that dramatic

That's a terrific coin, and this has been (for me) a very enlightening thread! Congrats on the find, Coindeuce!

I had never heard of a "railroad rim" until I read this thread, and it turns out that I own a rather nice one on an XF-AU 1952 Lincoln that caught my eye in the Syracuse Hoard. (I probably only noticed the coin in the first place because the half that was missing the collar has a larger diameter than the rest of the coins in the roll.) Anyway, I put it aside as an oddity, and when I saw the photo of Realgator's railroad rim dime, it rang a bell. Fortunately, I hadn't tossed my railroad rim Lincoln into the culls box as damaged. I'll now stick it into a 2x2.

The railroad rim Morgan is stunning; on a smaller coin without a reeded edge it's a much less dramatic error. My question is: Is this type of error on a Lincoln worth much of a premium?

At the moment I don't believe NGC has a dollar size insert for the edge view slab. So far the only thing I have seen in the have been high relief double eagles. I tried finding out from them at Central States what sizes they did have, but they didn't know. I posted the question over on the NGC forum and they say they can do Capped bust halves, double eagles and silver dollars. So they should be able to holder that RR rim. You would have to request the edgeview holder.

With a the new ANACS holder you would be able to see about a quarter of the rim by looking up through the bottom of the holder. And it won't be real clear. Even though the coin looks like it is floating there in mid-air, you can't see the edge clearly except through the bottom of the holder and then it is "fuzzy" because of the thickness of the plastic you are looking through.

Cam, I talked to Scott S. at NGC today. He stated that they would be able to encapsulate the 38 mm Dollars in the EdgeView holder. HIYO RAILROAD RIM!! Off it goes...

I was able to cherrypick a '21-P Infrequent Edge Reeding last month in a OGH PCGS-64 holder. At least in those holders, the edge was distinguishable although slightly distorted. Probably only in the dollar series though.
