Here is a challenge. An 1808 bust half- what say you..

I did buy this one and I ain't sending her backimage
This one should go all across the board as far as guessing a grade--But its free- so give it a shot. It is obviously a late die state coin. What I can add is the luster is all there-period. Look for the wear on this one guys, not the normal weak strike known in this year. The variety isn't a hard one.
I have to give credit to mgoodm3 for taking these pics.
It is a challenge to try to grade this with this low pixel pic and much easier with the larger res version.
It is in an NGC holder, and I agree with the seller- graded correctly (easy for me with the coin in hand I know).
This one has found a long term home.

I only wish these early bust halves were cheaper so I could buy more of these more often.....

AU55, just gut feeling no analysis invovled. image

Although not being familiar with die states and weakness of striks it could just as easily be an MS62/63 coin.

I think it is an AU coin...50-53.
Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.

I don't believe you, you DID say it's in a NGC holder right? I don't see all this luster you talk about from the image either.
    PCGS F-12 NGC MUCH higher.image

AU-58 if that is rub on the high parts of the wing & Liberty's throat; otherwise an MS coin. It has a great look overall.
  • topstuftopstuf Posts: 14,803 ✭✭✭✭✭
If it's NGC, I'll guess PF70 specimen with star. To get 58 at NGC it's gotta have scratches an cleaning.

When I saw it, I was back and forth between au58 and ms63, I'll go with au58, but I'd be willing to pay ms63 for it.

I talked myself into seeing wear on the high points, so AU55

I love, love, love it. I am gonna say 62 and be out on a limb by myself. The hints are there, no wear, luster.....so OK NGC 62.

Normally, I would say this is NGC AU58. Because you two agree on the holder grade, I will say it is only NGC AU55 on the holder. Gorgeous coin, one I would be proud to own.image

I gotta believe it'd be a 58 (slight rub) even with the worn dies, but TPG grading being what it is: MS62

Very attractive coin. Love the color.

    Mmmmm, bisecting die crack... mmmmmm...

Grade guesses from 12-70, not all serious. I don't see all the luster that you mention, but this isn't a coin for amateurs to be guessing on, so you will excuse me when my guess proves laughably low. 55.

Beautiful coin and grading this is tough... I like it alot. The strike adds to the challenge of grading it. I think there is cabinet friction and the technical grade is likely 58. In terms of quality and eye appeal, I wish that I could say 62 but I feel that is a disservice to the coin and everyone else. It is possible for it to go MS, but I need to see it first. In closing, this is one of those coins that the grade on the plastic should be a secondary concern. Excellent pick up and addition to your collection JRocco... congrats and it is good to hear it will be "staying put" for the long term

What do you mean "laughably low", eight of us called it 55 before you?

Thanks for the nice words guys. I really like this coin. It has drop dead eye appeal and is a nice early date bustie to boot. This coin does have some rub, but only a little. I am not a registry guy and I am neutral on plastic, so this coin was purchased because I really like it.
It is in an NGC AU 58 holder and is really easy to grade in hand because the surfaces show the rub when looked at from an angle and they likewise show the areas without rub just as plainly. This will be a keeper for sure. For the record, I think this would easily cross to a PCGS 58 holder because the coin is a 58 in hand. But not on my watch.
    Thanks again guys.

Glad you really like it. I actually found this a while back at a small show of about 30 tables. Wasn't expecting it, but I did have a check in my wallet for this type of occasion. I grabbed it very quick. Not a rip mind you as the seller knew what he had. I didn't get to say a proper good-bye to this one.

As you know I'm not into the Registry and don't care what holder (if any) a nice coin is in. I felt the coin was all there. I thought about crossing it just for the heck of it, (and I don't think it would have a problem doing so) but then it would have cost you more!image Enjoy!

HaHa stman, you should have waited for the check to clear before you sent this one............ Only kiddingimage

Let me thank you here for this one- It is a nice addition to my set and one that needs a certain companion coin-if you know what I mean. You also should know by now stman, that I also don't give a rats a$$ whose holder it is in... if I like it, I want it.......raw or fully entombed.

Nice bust half and I have no problems with the grade, no matter whose holder it's in. You think Laura would offer a good AU-58 price even though it's in a 'not PCGS' holder?
